This post came a bit late. I’ve been disconnected the past few weeks and didn’t really get to update the blog, so here it goes: Saturday 14thof April, I had one of my best dives so far. I had been to this site before, but only with diving students; I’m referring to the wreck “HMAS Adelaide” in Terrigal. Adrian, a Rumanian I did the Scuba Instructor course with, recently started a small company to do boat dives. He bought a red inflatable boat that fits 5 divers and he’s been taking people out in different sites, especially Magic Point (main attraction being a cave with Grey Nurse Sharks, which I really wanted to do but couldn’t find the time) and the HMAS Adelaide. So, I paid Adrian to go on two boat dives that Saturday. I ... read more

It seems that all I've been writing about is diving, but it's almost the only thing I've been doing, so I'll try not to be too monotonous about it. By Saturday the 31st, I had 95 dives, so still needed a few to start teaching. I went to Bare Island to do 3 shore dives with lots of different divers that left from the dive shop. I did the first two dives with Ryan and Jonny and the last one; I offered to lead 2 recently open water certified divers. Nothing too exciting about these dives in particular; the visibility was fairly good and got to see more or less the same type of marine life as usual, except for a needlefish, which I hadn't seen before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needlefish). The next day I had to go help ... read more

Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd we continued doing the diving specialties course. We had to do enriched air diving, deep diving and wreck diving. For all dives, there were Carl, Niamh, Ryan and I. Wednesday morning we went to Camp Cove to embark on a boat that took us out for both dives. The first one we did was a deep dive with nitrox (enriched air) to about 30 meters in a spot called Dee Why Wide. We went down the anchorline of the boat to about 30 meters and did some exercises there; see how much color perception is affected at depth and see how pressure affects objects. After that we went back to the anchor and started ascending. We had to do an 8 minute safety stop at 5 meters. This just means you ... read more

On Wednesday I had a day off, so I just stayed home and didn’t do much really. I studied some diving theory and watched a couple of films. At night I had dinner with Rachel and Carl and that was about it. Their house is in a place called Gymea, which is right next to a river and the Royal National Park, so it doesn’t feel like living in Sydney. It’s a really nice area, but it doesn’t have much access to public transportation, which is the main reason I stayed home that day. They live with a blue parrot named Angel and a dog called Splash. On Thursday I got up early to go with Rachel and Carl to the dive shop to go diving, but it was raining too much and the sea conditions ... read more

The last week I was diving almost every day. On monday, I was asked to go along with some people doing their Dive Master course (they had to do an exercise which consists in making a map of the sea bottom in a specific area). The name of the place was Oak Park, located near Cronulla Beach. There was a lot of swell which made it difficult to tie the bouys with flags to the bottom to mark the area for the map, so we got out of the water and headed to a place called Bass & Flinders and the sea conditions there were a lot better. We had time for one dive and it was sufficient for them to place the bouys and start their maps. After that we had something to eat and ... read more

City Sydney Language English Currency Australian dollar Climate high 19c - low 9c - sunny Saturday dawned bright, early and noisy as one would come to expect from Australia. In fact it started about 5.00am with the orchestral symphony of bird squawks, squeaks and screeches, ensuring we didn’t sleep in and miss our first full day of holidays. Apparently they were on their best behaviour. But it was not enough to deter us falling asleep again! In fact it was a very relaxing day, with a walk along the San Souci coast enjoyed by all (including Wally the dog) in the morning and a good ol’ gourmet Ozzie burger for lunch. This was all in preparation for a very special occasion in the evening. We were to experience a dining delight at Sepia with David and ... read more
