1. Toronga Chimps
These Chimpanzee were all snuggled in a line :) We’d almost forgotten what 6am looked like, but we were up at the crack of dawn to try to avoid the worst of the Sydney traffic to get to Toronga Zoo. It’s only a 38km drive, but takes about an hour avoiding tolls – but up to 2 hours during rush hour traffic!
Looking at the area around the zoo on the map there were some parks and café’s so we decided we’d get there early and have breakfast out, then head to the zoo for it’s opening time, 9:30am. The traffic was awful! Even at this early hour, not helped because there had been a bad accident on the toll road so local traffic was much heavier and also there were roadworks closing off one of the roads to the zoo! We eventually arrived and went to Frenchy’s café for breakfast. This is a lovely little place, really peaceful, and perfect for what we wanted.
We had crepe’s for breakfast, sitting outside in the sunshine then took a walk down to the Georges Heights Gun Battery. There wasn’t really much to see there at the Gun Battery, but just beyond it was a small pathway with benches in
2. Giraffe in Sydney
Managed to get the Giraffe and Zebra with the Sydney skyline small open area’s which gave you a stunning view of the sea.
After a while, we decided to head to the zoo which meant we got there about 45mins before it opened. But fortunately, they open the outer gates at 9am which leads to a coffee shop so we sat and had a drink and an Anzac cookie while the ibis, kookaburra and brush turkeys looked on waiting for an opportunity to eat it!
Before we knew it, the zoo was open and we headed in. This place is huge, it’s laid out pretty well so you follow a main route down (it’s on quite a big slope!) and venture off to each section before returning to the main route and continuing on. They have lots to see far too many to mention but out highlights were the giraffes, which are positioned perfectly to capture the Sydney skyline in the background when you take a photo. The chimpanzee’s who were all snuggled in a row watching all the humans doing the same along the fence! The bird show and the seal show were really good too.
When you get all the way to the bottom, you can
3. Sydney from Toronga Zoo
The Sydney skyline form the Free BIrd Show at Toronga jump on the cable car to be taken back up to the top again. The only downside about today was the crowds, it’s school holidays so it was absolutely packed which meant packed out shows and lots of queueing. It took us over 30mins to get onto the cable car!
We left the zoo just after 3pm, so we spent about five and a half hours in there, it was well worth the money.
The drive back was horrendous, the accident on the toll road was still causing issues so the traffic was still much heavier than usual on the normal roads. It took nearly 2 hours to get back, we just hope the journey to the airport isn’t as stressful tomorrow.
So that’s all folks, our trip has come to an end. Just case packing and the flight back now, all being well we’ll hopefully be back in the UK by 7am Friday morning.
We’ll miss exploring each day, seeing the amazing views, birds and wildlife in general. But we won’t miss the endless application of bug spray and sun lotion, or the rude drivers!
