Funk House
My hostel in Kings Cross, Sydney Anti American Idiots -
So I guess that could mean two different things, depending on how you read it. It could mean that someone is against American Idiots, people who live in America but do not educate themselves on what their government is doing or how the actions of the US affect the world. Or, it could mean that someone is ‘anti-American’, but they themselves are idiots. I believe there exists too many of both these type of people…but right now I want to talk about the latter.
I am staying in a real seedy part of Sydney. An area called Kings Cross, which is a mixture of the Tenderloin and Haight areas of San Francisco. The reason I am in this area is because this is where all the hostels are. It’s the only place they can afford to have inexpensive lodging in a city where property is so expensive. Anyway, I don’t really mind the area, and the subway system can get me anywhere in the city in minutes. Also, the hostel I’m in, The Funk House, is really pretty cool.
But last night when I returned from Darling Harbour and The Rocks, I went into
Opera House
View from The Rocks this little corner shop that sells pizza, hotdogs, and other late nights munchies. I walked in and I could tell the guy behind the counter wasn’t the same happy man I had seen the day before. He had almost a frightened look on his face. I noticed the source of his condition as soon as I saw the other customers in the shop. There were these 3 beefy looking, skinhead types standing around, eating their food, and being loud and obnoxious.
I ordered my hotdog, with mustard, ketchup, cheeses, and jalapenos. As the poor old man behind the counter was cooking it up, one of the guys said something to me about ‘cheese and jalapeños’…here’s the conversation:
Fat Bastard - “blah blah blah cheese and jalapeños blah blah blah
Me (a little buzzed and irritated) - What?
Fat Bastard - Sorry, my English not so good (looks at his friends and laughs), why you like cheese and jalapeños?”
Me - “Couldn’t tell ya, just do”
Fat Bastard - “Where you from?”
Me - “The US”
Fat Bastard (face gets angry, moves a little closer to me) - “And YOU admit that!”
Me (pissed off now) - “Yeah! Where YOU
Harbor Bridge
View from The Rocks from?”
Fat Bastard - “Ger-MA-ny!”
Me - “Really? Does GERMANY admit that?!”
At which point I grabbed my hot dog, thanked the old man who was now laughing (nervously), and ran out the front door and across the street to my hostel before the meathead could figure out I just insulted him.
It’s these people who really piss me off. They are anti-American just because it’s the popular thing to be. Do they really think all Americans are to blame for everything America does? I mean, c'mon, these guys were from Germany! Not exactly the poster-child for a perfect country. It’s these same guys that, if they were born in the US, would be those idiots who don’t educate themselves.
I guess I am just sick of apologizing for my country. I do all I can to make it a better place, I vote, I debate, I listen to people's views, I join groups and protests against the policies I think are flawed, I try to stay away from companies who use and abuse this world, I travel and educate myself...I do all of this and I still get accosted by some ignorant assholes in a hotdog

Seedy, porno, drug, backpacker infested area of Sydney shop.

i understand
all i can tell you is.... i understand. working at buccaneers i actually get very little harassment for being american, but when i do honestly...it's the germans. anyways, i'm on your side man, we can only do our bit. however, it still feels shitty to get blamed for problems and policies that are born out of the rule of an individual we don't even support. shame. sending you many positive american thoughts...hope this finds you well. pit stop in south africa? i'm here until end of july :)
