Day Trip to Carrathool

Took a day drive 60km west of Darlington Point to Carrathool. A dirt road along the North bank of the Murrumbidgee and the Sturt Hwy back along the South bank.

Carrathool is an historical town, once used as a transport network for wool. First bullocks were used, followed by the Paddle Steamer, then the Railway. Large sheep properties on either side of the river contributed to Australia's major exports. Today properties have almagamated or diversified but it is still a viable area for produce.

This tiny town has a population of 99 people. Once a year in February, 4000 people descend on the town for "The Last of the Bough Shed Race Meeting". They come by plane, car and bus. This was established in 1878 and has continued each year. Punters love it, but I have no idea where all the people and horses stay. They even have a "Belle of the Bough Sheds Ball". We missed it this year as it was 2nd Feb 13.
