A rather early start for us as we had a two hour drive to get to the Blue Mountains which is inland and North of New South Wales, just outside Sydney. Surprisingly it is Greg who wakes up first and he has to practically roll me out of bed. You would think that starting work at 6.45am nearly every day would have made me slightly more accustomed to getting up early but that doesn't seem to be the case. By the time we get organised it is nearly half ten so actually not that early a start after all. The ride up in the car is faultless and we arrive just before midday. Jacki, our flatmate, asks us what we would like to go and see and Greg mentions he would like to see a waterfall he has heard about. Only problem is he doesn't know for the life of him where it is. By chance we happen to pass a sign for Wentworth Falls which sounds like the kind of place a waterfall would be. So we take a turn off and go in search of it. After twenty minutes of driving round in a big circle we realise that
we have actually turned into an expensive housing estate of the same name, doh. We drive on and eventually arrive at the most impressive viewing platform of the Blue Mountains and the Three Sisters. And here's a little bit of info for you- the Blue Montains are so named because of the eucalyptos trees which gives the whole area a blue tint. So there you go, not just a pretty face after all. We do more of the tourist thing and Greg takes about 5o pictures. I turn around to take some pictures myself and low and behold a fly manages to kamikazee itself directly into the back of my throat. I start to gag and people just stare at me like i'm crazy rather than try to see if i'm alright. I feel slightly sick at the thought of swallowing a fly while at the same time all i can hear in my head is the song "there was an old lady who swallowed a fly". Well, I bet she didn't like it much either. So after the fly incident we decide to have some proper food at a local picnic spot. At this point of the day the
weather is well above forty degrees and there is absolutely no wind so we are all melting. We choose a nice bench in the shade to eat but get attacked by about a million flies. In the end we have to abandon ship as they are landing everywhere. Greg looses patience and starts trying to fling his trainer at them, to no avail. After lunch we take a trip over to the Blue Mountains Scenic point and catch the worlds steepest train to the bottom. It looks really scary but it is actually not that bad once you're in. We catch the cable car back up to the top again which gives us some beautiful views over the whole area. Unfortunately it is somewhat spoiled by the million Japanese tourists surounding us who are taking pictures of anything and everything. Not quite the peaceful and tranquil experience we expected. When boarding the cable car i nearly get trampled by an old lady pushing me in the back and trying to get by me so Greg gets the elbows out before turning around and telling her to back off. Ah, I love that man. We stop off for a quick shandy
on the way back (sightseeing in the intense sunshine is hard work) and then we pass a sign for the waterfall at Wentworth Falls. Turns out there is actually a waterfall there but we had taken the wrong turn off. Jacki stays in the car but Greg and I wander down to take a look. We cannot believe just how steep it is, and the viewing rail is about an inch away from the edge, which is a sheer drop of about 1000 feet at least. I am actually more scared than Greg for a change. Greg gets some amazing footage on the video camera. Another great day was had by all and we drive back to Coogee in the evening for a much needed cold beer.
