Heading out in the wilderness for 3 nights to South Ballina Beach. Not too far from home but we are looking forward to trying out the Camper and all our new camper gear. Went and checked out the campsites today and they are nice and shady and quiet. Our long weekend is going to consist of fishing, swimming and hanging at the beach.... read more

I love the drive from the border down to this Byron Bay/Ballina area. The hills rising above the coastline are green and lush and the beaches are long and tempting. Driving beside the Tweed River and seeing Mount Warning rising above the cane fields is always a thrill. From Murwillumbah we made a little diversion to the rather hippy little town of Uki, then continued on our way to busy backpacker/beautiful people Byron Bay. A must is always a walk along the long and fabulous beach there, but a wind had come up and put paid to that, so instead we just drove around the main streets, seeing what goodies all the shops had in their windows, and on then to the pretty nearby town of Bangalow. Bangalow’s little country shops are now quite upmarket, with ... read more

This morning, I somehow found myself missing the 9.55 bus (I blame the really nice shower I had earlier for that) so ended up on the 11.25 instead. First port of call(he said sounding like a cruise liner) was the Travel Info Centre to inform them about their incorrect advice yesterday...there is NO Greyhound Australia ticket office at the Big Prawn Restaurant! After browsing the shops for a while, I returned back to Horizon Drive in time for the kids to return from school...and fulfil my outstanding promise to Alex, a game of Monopoly!!! After an awful start and two stints in jail caused by yet more double trouble (why do I always seem to have the knack of hitting doubles all the time...yep, this worries me too) I got my act together and aided by ... read more

I surfaced once again at 7.45 and witnessed the usual morning departures from Horizon Drive Station. With breakfast, coffee and a bonus two hours sleep (hehehe), I took an amble up to the shops for a quick browse and on my way back, got absolutely soaked. Having dried out and changed, I realised that I forgot to sort out my Greyhound ticket to Brisbane whilst out earlier so as the weather had improved a little, I went to carry out this simple task. Simple...my foot, the woman in the Tourist Info Centre was wrong yesterday as there is no ticket office at the Transit Centre which irritated me a bit but more so on the walk back where I got my second drenching of the day!!! I knew I should have packed a brolly!! It's now ... read more

I woke up at eight o clock, just in time to flag the kids off to school before then readying myself for the short bus ride into Central Ballina. Upon arrival, I proceeded first to the top end of town where the Tourist Information Office is stationed and picked up a few useful leaflets of potential places to visit including Nimbin, an old hippy town fuelled by drugs and Ballina driving range to maybe help improve my far from perfect golf swing. I then took a short stroll along the riverbank which was very pleasant indeed and spent about an hour sitting, just watching the fishermen fish...with about as much success as the surfers down at Byron Bay... in fact, I didn’t even see one fish caught!!! How dull...what fascinated me though were the expressions of ... read more

Today, I was awake at seven thirty which meant I got to witness the everyday spectacle of the household early morning routine which is very reminiscent of Witham Train Station as it goes with passengers departing for school and to their respective jobs...even the pets were in on the scenario!!! Having had my morning toast and numerous cups of coffee, I took a wander up to the Big Prawn Restaurant and then across the road to the West Ballina Shopping Mall where I found Farmer Charlie's vegetable shop and better still Alfredo's...yep, a bar...and yep, another opportunity to be worried!. The Bookies is in the Bar...that's surely not wise is it!!! Alcohol Influenced Betting or A.I.B is a pretty common practice in Australia...but I think the idea need to be tweaked somewhat to make it more ... read more

The rain has followed me down the coast...its pouring down outside which thus prevents any outside activity, apart from water polo that is!! We did however, venture up to the shops on a couple of occasions to pick up some household items plus Liz and I also had time for a quirky 10 cent bet on the distinct possibility of one of the kids using the phrase 'I really need that/one of them'!!! We had an awesome Roast Beef dinner tonight which was simply yummy, not sure about the X Factor which would mean it lacking something...this was very much the mmmm factor!!!... read more

I surfaced at eight...showered, shaved and assembled my cases outside the front door in preparation for the oh so familiar walk across to the bus stop...the difference today was not only that the bus shelter crowded with people (well, 5 anyway), but also it was raining. In order to avoid getting soaked, I had a brainwave and stood under Mikes veranda and waited for the bus there...Clever Me!! On hitting the City Centre, I lugged my baggage through the precinct and was greeted by a huge crowd watching a fashion show, complete with catwalk and models. I observed this phenomenon for about twenty minutes before the commentator announced the imminent arrival of Jennifer Hawkins, upon which everyone clapped and cheered enthusiastically...whilst I stood there and pondered the immediately more pressing question on my mind...Who Exactly Is ... read more
