Entrance to the Bow Valley Parkway This is written on Friday & pertains to our activities on Thursday:
We wanted to be on the move as early as possible this morning for good wildlife viewing along the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff & Lake Louse. Early we were, as the road is closed from 8 pm to 8 am to prevent car/wildlife collisions while they are on the move at night. We had to wait 30 minutes for the road to reopen and it was worth the wait! We had not traveled far when we came upon a huge brown bear grazing close to the road. Very shortly after that, we saw a bull elk & another brown bear. We drove the Columbia Icefield Parkway to Jasper, which is 180 miles of gorgeous scenery. The highway gets it's name from the 100+ glaciers that line the road. Shortly after getting our camper set up at Whistler's Campground just outside Jasper, Alberta, I looked out the window & there was an elk grazing about 50 feet from the camper! We drove into Jasper & walked around town for a bit & picked up a few groceries. On our way back to the campground, 4 elk crossed the
