Thursday morning we changed our original plans for our route back to MN quite a bit due to the wild fires burning in the Western US. We camped an hour west of Jasper Thursday night at Mt Robson Provincial Park. Mt Robson is the tallest peak of the Canadian Rockies at nearly 13,000 feet. The fire ban in BC has been lifted, so we could finally have a campfire Thursday night. Only the second one we have had on this trip. Along our route Thursday we stopped at a very cute little coffee shop where we enjoyed coffee, blueberry pie & wifi! Friday we drove to Jasper & set up at Wapiti Campground in Jasper National Park. Due to our last minute change in plans, we didn’t have a reservation & set up in “the overflow”, ... read more

Monday started with a wonderful breakfast, which Mike cooked outdoors. He fixed scrambled eggs, hash browns, breakfast sausage & blueberry pancakes. We were certainly full for quite a while after all that food! We continued down the Cassiar Highway to Stewart, BC. It is a beautiful drive with many, many glaciers & waterfalls along the way. I wonder how many times I have commented to Mike, “this is so beautiful” throughout this trip. We have also lost count on how many glaciers & waterfalls we have seen; I love them all! We camped for two nights at Bear River RV Park in Stewart, BC. Very nice little campground along the river & very quiet as it sits out of town a little bit, although Stewart is a very small town, so pretty quiet everywhere. We needed ... read more

This blog will be for Friday through Sunday. We have been “off the grid” for several nights, staying in Provincial Parks throughout British Columbia with no electric, water or wifi! I am surviving, but it is tough:) As you can see in the pictures, these parks are immaculate & quite scenic! Friday we had an early start at 6 AM from Whitehorse to get to Boya Lake Provincial Park, which was a 315 mile drive. They do not take reservations at that campground & we were able to get a lakeside campsite; hooray! This lake is a gorgeous teal color, as the pictures show. The bottom of the lake is white marl, thus the water color. It is very dry throughout BC so no campfires; bummer! Mike grilled a couple hot dogs on his grill Friday ... read more

I think I left off on Monday evening; no bears at Alison Point! Tuesday morning we had reservations for a glacier & marine wildlife tour to Columbia Glacier through Prince William Sound out of Valdez. What an amazing day & experience! Our captain was a wealth of knowledge on the history of Valdez, the big spill from the Exxon/Valdez in 1989 & life in the sound! I am going to say this was the highlight of our trip so far; although we loved the glacier landing in Denali & halibut fishing too! Columbia Glacier is the second largest tidewater glacier in the world & “calves” very large pieces of glacier ice almost daily. We felt like we might have been on the Titanic as our captain very carefully maneuvered our vessel through huge icebergs. The incredible ... read more

Today we managed to get at least 30 minutes between coughing fits, so I think we are on the road to recovery! We sure had a doozy of some kind of bronchial illness! Food tastes good too again, & we had chicken fettuccine alfredo for supper in the RV tonight. Saturday we drove the beautiful Seward Highway back north to Anchorage & then the Glenn Highway to Palmer where we stayed one night at Mountain View RV Park. I didn’t feel like cooking Saturday night so we went to Palmer Ale House for pizza. After that our sore throats were screaming for ice cream so we each had a mini blizzard at Dairy Queen; boy was that good! We arrived in wet, cloudy Valdez yesterday (Sunday) mid afternoon. Another beautiful drive albeit clouds & rain obstructing ... read more

Thursday morning we still did not have much energy from this virus we have, so we took it easy around Seward. We walked along the harbor & watched boats come & go. Seward is a small seaside village, which has beautiful mountains all around. We went to the Alaska Sea Life Center where there are various sea life animals & birds to observe. It was fun watching the birds! We had a light lunch back at the RV before taking a nap. We felt a little better after resting, so we drove to Exit Glacier & went for a mile walk to the glacier for a better view. Last night was early to bed again, we were wore out! Today we are feeling better with just low grade fevers & coughs. We had a nice walk ... read more

Monday morning I woke with a fever & Mike was not feeling the best either, so after breakfast, we went back to bed! Luckily, our drive Monday was only 45 minutes so we could get the rest we need. We left Homer about 11:30 & arrived at Reel Em Inn Campground a little over an hour later. The campground was much nicer than we expected. After getting checked in, we took a nap as we had to get up early for our halibut charter on Tuesday. We certainly have some kind of nasty virus with fevers & coughs! I woke Tuesday with 103 fever & almost didn’t go on our halibut trip, but I perked up a little after a shower & did go out on the boat making sure I had enough DayQuil, Tylenol & ... read more

Monday morning: I wrote our blog last night, but due to very slow Internet, it would not post. I am adding this little segment so the following makes sense. Oh yes, guess who has the fever this morning; me! I am writing this Sunday evening, which means we have been gone an entire month already. The time is really going fast! Mike still didn’t feel the best yesterday, so we had a very low key day. It was raining all day anyway, so no fun to be outdoors in such weather. I made chicken wild rice soup for lunch & after lunch, we put $24 in clothes washer & dryers! We went to the grocery store after laundry was done for a few supplies. We went to bed early because he felt lousy & we had ... read more

Every day of this trip just keeps getting better & better as we explore this 365 million acre state!! Our drive Thursday was to Homer, which is on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The highway on our route has a triple designation; National Forest Scenic Byway, All-American Road & Alaska Scenic Byway. Indeed, it was very scenic as a good portion of the highway hugs the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, which is called, Cook Inlet. Beautiful snow capped mountains every direction we looked, even though low clouds did hamper our views a bit. We are camped out right along Cook Inlet for 4 nights at Ocean View RV Park; very nice park overlooking the ocean, gorgeous mountains & ocean out our front door. Now I must mention this crazy tide they have ... read more

Wednesday we drove to Anchorage to meet up with our God daughter, Shawna Pike-Wahlstrom & her adorable 3 children, ages 5,4 & 2. Before we met her, we drove to Earthquake Park & walked 3 miles along a nice wooded trail. Anchorage suffered a very powerful earthquake on Good Friday, 1964. Earthquake Park is set in the woods where an entire neighborhood “slid” into the ocean during the 4 1/2 minute earthquake; unbelievable! After our walk we joined Shawna & the kiddos & enjoyed a very informative narrated tour of Anchorage on the trolley. Shawna was able to score tickets for free; which made the tour even better. Now a few facts about that earthquake; it was 10 times more powerful than the recent earthquake in Nepal, with 139 people losing their lives in the state ... read more
