As mention in an earlier entry, we have Restraunts of many ethnicities. However, if you're from a big city, it may not be such a big deal, nowadays. However, I guess we are the only city that can boast of Hawaiian restraunts. (L&L Hawaiian Barbeque don't count). If you are going to a commercial Luau you will get to sample the big 3 of Hawaiian cuisine of Kalua Pork, Lomi Salmon and Poi. Only if you're invited to an authenic Luau thrown by locals, you have a chance to sample Laulau, Opihi, Poki, raw crab, Pipikaula, etc. Opihi, a local delicacy can probarbly be copmpared to local food what Escargot may be to Western food. It's a raw limpet usually harvest from rocks exposed to rough waves, which makes it so cherished. Laulau could be compared to a tamale in that its fish, pork, taro leaves wrapped in Ti Leaves and steamed for hours. Pipikaula could be compared to beef jerky. For those who aren't going to a luau and want to sample Hawaiian food, the best bet would be to go to the food court at Ala Moana Shopping Center and go to The Poi Bowl and order the combo

that has Kalua Pork, Laulau, Pipikaula, Haupia, Lomi Salmon and a choice of rice or poi. I think that will come out to less than $10.00. BTW, Lomi Salmon is salted raw salmon diced together with tomatoes, onions, and green onions. Even for the uninitiated, I don't think there be a problem. Poi on the other hand, is an acquired taste, so maybe rice would be a safer alternative. Maybe you can order a side order of Poi if you're curious and split it among yourselves.
Haupia is a coconut pudding desert which you may also get at a luau. For those who want to go to a Hawaiian Restraunt, perhaps Ono Hawaiian Food on Kapahulu Ave. 3/4 miles from Waikiki might be the answer. However, they only serve lunch and usually there is a line outside, which tells you about it's food. Several buses go that way.

I think it was used to house the Royal Guards. It was located in the downtown area 3 blocks away, but completely dismanteled and rebuilt on the grounds of Iolani Palace about 30 years ago.
