On today’s agenda was going to The Sight and Sound Theater to see their production of Moses, but first we had breakfast at the Casey Jones Restaurant at our motel. The atmosphere was awesome as it was an actual dining car attached to the building. The waitresses were dress as conductors and were cute as can be!
Our meals were delicious. The breakfast potatoes were outstanding! We shared scrapple, which is like mush but with added pork scraps and seasoning. Not everyone liked it, but I did, especially with syrup!
After breakfast we spent time in the gift shop which was filled with all kinds of train memorabilia. It also was filled with local food products.
The theater suggest arriving 45 minutes early which we did, but the place was already packed! We were able to park close to the entrance and get Terry to his seat without too much trouble.
The show is incredible. The actors, actresses, and singer ms were all so talented. The special effects were unbelievable!! There’s a main stage and two side stages. They also utilize the aisles snd seating area on the main floor. They have live animals that they ride
or lead in and out to make the show very real.
There were two delays in the show. The first in the first act which was technical difficulties. I imagine one of their special effects didn’t work properly. The second was in the second act when a horse relieved himself on stage. It had to be cleaned up before the show continued. It was done in semi darkness and to a great round of applause!!
Once the show was over we checked out the gift shop and took some pictures outside. Once we left we just drove around viewing the beautiful farms, watching the Amish/mennonites go about their business, and shopping. Terry and Ed went to Barry’s car barn in Intercourse, PA while Karen and I walked around the stores in town.
You might wonder about a town named Intercourse and how it ended up with a name like that. I took a picture of a sign that explains three possible ways this could have happened. The first person who told me there was a town in PA named Intercourse was El Still. He came to school with a shirt that had a picture of a popular
signpost near here. We didn’t find the signpost but I did find a picture of it on the internet.
Some of the other towns we visited were Bird-In-Hand, Strasburg, Ronks, and Paradise. One place that was interesting to drive thru was Strasburg. While it’s a small community, they are home to the Strasburg Railway, which is the oldest continuously operated standard railway in the western hemisphere and the oldest utility in Pennsylvania. They have several speciality events held year round.
Strasburg is also home to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. It houses over 100 locomotives and railway cars both inside the museum and outside on the grounds. Sadly we didn’t get to visit but it would surely be worth a return trip!
It was time for dinner. We only had breakfast and a snack at the show so we were all hungry. A local recommended we go to The Fireside Tavern so that’s where we went. Our meal was delicious.
Following dinner we headed back to our Red Caboose Inn to reorganize the suburban and get ready to leave tomorrow. On the way back there was a little traffic jam. Unlike the oil and gas traffic we
experience at home, this traffic tie up was caused by cows going back to pasture after milking. Of course I included pictures
Tomorrow we travel to Newport, RI. We were there last year but didn’t allow enough time, so it was on our list of places to revisit!
