Another quick entry. We're staying with Sherry's aunt Diane and uncle Alan in Sparks, MD, just north of Baltimore. Yesterday we took mass transit out of Manhattan to NJ to pick up our car, then we drove to Philadelphia for lunch w/ my friend Sean and his wife Dea. As has been the case all along our trip route, we were running about 2-3 hours late, but we had a nice mid-afternoon bite at Sean and Dea's old pizza place, Garrett Hill Pizza near Villanova, PA. I'd definitely recommend a stop at GHP if you're in the area. This morning was spent consuming coffee and a home-cooked breakfast with great grits. In a word, Yum. Today we'll probably just relax before heading south to Washington DC tomorrow. Probably the funniest thing that's happened over the past ... read more

Today was a lot more low key but unforgettable nontheless. We slept in in an attempt to shake off the jet lag and acclimate to the time zone while deciding what's next. That took most of the morning and early afternoon, but when we finally did get going everything was just beautiful. Just walking the 5 blocks from West End to Central Park West we past at least a half dozen community gardens, parks, a riding stable, and a grand old school. Once inside the park we walked around the reservoir, dodging joggers and marvelling at the serenity that can exist in the heart of such a crowded and busy city. When we got to the 5th Ave side it's called Museum Row with one after the other for as far as you can see. The ... read more

Palmyra Pushing the limit for two days in Palmyra New York..... What a time we had ! Day One We drove four hours or more from Vermont to arrive in Palmyra New York. On the bus they make us play silly games and watch LDS movies to pass the time. We are fast becoming favourites in the bus, but I suspect that it is because of our accents. We are the only bookstore owners from overseas who were eligible for the trip. ( 2 from Alaska and about 6 from Canada- but that doesn't count ;) One lady on the bus had her 9 month old daughter with her and I asked if she needed help with the pram. Every one burst out laughing and one lady said "Ohhhh, you are like straight out of ... read more

We flew to Newark Airport from Salt Lake City via Houston. There was a cool space shop in the airport and we were so tempted to buy stuff but felt it would be a little fake as we were not actually visiting the space centre or even Houston, we were only here to swap planes so resisted buying space paraphernalia and space food for our kids (or was my husband really buying it for himself... hmmmm interesting :) On domestic flights in the United States there is hardly any food served, so with two planes to catch we spent most of the day starving. Flying into New York was so exciting and most people were trying to look out the window. However for some reason I was feeling really queasy and every time I tried to ... read more

Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses.---------Confucius WE ARE HEADING TO YELLOWSTONE FOR A WEEK THEN TO GRAND TETONS FOR 4 DAYS -------- THEN HOME TO GET READY FOR THE NEXT TRIP MAUREEN AND BOB July 14, 2005, Thursday. After a full day of rain yesterday, Thursday began with glimmers of sunshine and got our hopes up for the 8 hour Kenai Fjord National Park Cruise. However arriving at the pier, the staff informed us the weather was very unsettled out in the Alaskan Gulf. Did we want to continue with the trip? And, if the weather got worse the boat would be forced to return early. Hey life is a gamble and this is our window of opportunity, so of course, we went. Kenai gives us a glimpse back to when ice covered much of North ... read more

This week I mailed all my information/application stuff to the Japanese Consulate in New York so they can send me back my visa. It was pretty scary placing what is essentially my entire life at the moment (passport, certificate of eligibility) into an envelope and giving it to complete strangers. Correction, complete strangers who work for the Postal Service. *shudder* Just kidding! Still, I did insure the package and get tracking/delivery confirmation, so it should be fine. I hope. I just realized that three years ago at this time I was just arriving home from Ireland. I guess I'm feeling a little "homesick," because I really wish I was there right now. Maybe it's because we've had absolutely no rain, and the grass is all dead, and the sky is that hazy color that it gets ... read more

We land in Narita Tokyo Saturday at 3 or so. We'll drop our bags at the camp director's house. Catch some sleep. Wake up Sunday and catch the rail to Kyoto, Japan. I am spending the week in an area north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of my favorite foods in this area is the green chile cheeseburger. People in this area make your basic cheeseburger and then smother the cheese with green chiles. I am not an expert on various chile peppers, but I love these green chiles. One of the hallmarks of New Mexico food is green chiles. I asked one of the locals here where I could find a good green chile cheeseburger (everyone here sells them - even McDonalds and Burger King). He pointed me to the Owl Cafe. This is a local chain that began in San Antonio, New Mexico (I don't know where that is). They just opened on here in Coralles. A friend and I went to lunch at the Owl ... read more

New York, New York! yay! had a day off so went on a day trip to New York - if your lucky you'll be getting a postcard sometime (arent i nice!) - i sent them away today! If you missed out, it was because you were 'the weakest link, goodbye!' haha! nah just kidding! (you'll get one one day, if i have your address!) New York was so cool! I loved it, but man, how nuts would it be to grow up in this city - its fully concrete! its so huge, everything just towers above you - auckland doesnt even compare. Spent the day just cruising around, wandering the street. Didnt use cabs or the subway to get around, just the good old waiwai express! (thats feet for those who dont know their maori!) was ... read more
