Our first planned stop did not open until 10am so we did not have to get up and rush around. Alex went into the Walmart to get more DEF, washer fluid, we are using a lot due to bugs, and Spray paint we will need later today.
We pulled out around 9:30. We needed to back track a little. We had missed the musical road the night before. Outside Tigeras, NM there is a section of rumble strip on the road. When you drive on the strip at exactly 45 MPH it plays a song. You will hear one stanza of America the Beautiful. Banking a U to get to that part in the road was interesting. Glad we found it and were able to hear the song it was really cool.
Then we followed Route 66 to our next stop. Alex had told the girls it was a toy museum. He neglected to mention it was an Auto and Toy museum. They were not happy when we first pulled in. It was not a typical museum. It was more of a pole barn with a lot of cars outside. Once inside there were shelves
of toys, mostly trucks and cars. There were some nicely restored old cars inside the barn. Everything was well labeled. The owner was very welcoming and friendly. He visited with us for a while. Jordan had shown a liking to the restored Thunderbirds. The owner gave her the opportunity to sit in one.
We walked around and checked out the cars outside as well. This lot was not as large as the Salvage yard. Thank Goodness! Alex saw a convertible Metropolitan Nash but it was not for sale.
We jumped onto Route 40 which runs parallel to and/or overlaps Route 66. Not all of Route 66 is in drivable condition.
We stopped at the Route 66 monument in New Mexico after a quick stop down the road for gas. We took lots of pictures. The lot was empty so we opened up the camper and had a quick lunch.
We stopped at Russell’s Truck Stop and Car Museum. This museum was free and inside the truck shop. Much nicer and cleaner than the one earlier today. The girls sat at a table and tried to use the free
WiFi to download again. Alex and Jody walked through the museum. There were cars as well as memorabilia. Saw so Hess trucks and Pepsi signs.
On the road again. We were headed to TEXAS. We had seen a few signs about the Texas Outdoor Musical. Jody did some research while we were driving and we decided this would be a worthwhile stop. We were so distracted we missed the Ghost Town we had planned to stop at. Not feeling like we had time to turn around we pressed on.
Next stop was Cadillac Ranch along Route 66. Alex had purchased the spray paint this morning for everyone to be able to tag the Cadillacs planted into the ground. The girls were having fun. We had to try to stay upwind so the paint was not blowing back into our faces. We shared what was left of our paint as we left with a young family coming in. I am sure by the time this blog is posted our marks with be covered.
Headed to Amarillo to get to the show. We had to drive south to the town of Canyon and
then to the Palo Duro State Park. The amphitheater was build into one side of the canyon. The other side was the backdrop for the musical. We arrived in to for the chuck wagon dinner. There was pulled pork, brisket, and sausage as well as beans, coleslaw and potato salad. Alexis ate a lot of bread. Jody still had snacks in her pack so all of the girls had some snacks to help supplement. Alex and Jody enjoyed the meal. Though the meal Grace kept trying to do the math to figure out how Alex ended up with 4 cherry cobbler desserts.
We headed to the amphitheater. The night was cooling off which was good. The show was about the settlers, farmers and ranchers, of the Texas panhandle. There was lots of singing and dancing. The backdrop was amazing. There was a thunderstorm in the show that even had thunder that split a tree and scared most of us. During one scene they started a fire in the canyon when they were having a prairie fire. Then end of the show had a wonderful tribute to veterans with music and fireworks. During intermission we had an ice
cream break. We shared 2 pints of ice cream during the second half of the show. Great night!
We really had wanted to get to Oklahoma tonight so even though the show ended at 10:45 we were headed back on the road.
We stopped for gas in town because of the $2.11 diesel and headed to Oklahoma. Along the way we did have two stops on route 66.
First we stopped at the Buggy Ranch. This is a small yard with VW beetles planted into the yard, a mini version of Cadillac Ranch. These had been spray painted as well but we were out of paint and it was dark out. We used Sid’s headlights to shine on the cars so we could get a few pictures. Alex got out to take a few of him with the cars.
Next we swung by the Conoco Station on Route 66. This had the iconic neon lights lit up. Not sure the pictures will do it justice. The girls were asleep so Alex and Jody were the only ones who got to witness this icon.
At 2:30
we finally stopped at a Walmart in Elk City, Oklahoma to crash for the night.
