Nixon's Birthplace
This house is a replica of Nixon's birthplace. All of the furniture in the house is either original or of the period. Chapter 17 TRAVELS WITH CALI
April 27: This Monday was a settle down, recuperate and do laundry day. Through all of that, Glenda and I managed to talk for hours. It seems like the two of us have been next door neighbors all our lives!
April 28: Glenda drove me over to Yorba Linda, the site of President Nixon’s Library and birthplace. We got quite a surprise when we got there, since there were 2500 school kids also visiting that day! It was an event not mentioned on the website! There was a seminar on water conservation for children on the site. Fortunately, most of the exhibits and areas of activities were outside the library and museum themselves so we weren’t quite inundated by little ones!
I was impressed most by the First Ladies Rose Garden. There were many varieties and colors of roses and it smelled wonderful! Another impressive display was the replica of the house in which Nixon was born. Much of the furniture was original. The gravesites of Richard and Pat Nixon were humble, but lovely, overlooking the rose garden. The exhibits inside the building were also well done in my opinion. There was the usual

The rose garden was in full bloom. Many of the roses were named for the First Ladies, so it is called the First Ladies Rose Garden. The grave sites overlook the garden and the reflecting pool. oval office, and many displays of gifts received by the President while he was in office. One very unusual room contained life-sized bronze-looking sculptures of many of the world leaders with whom Nixon dealt. I enjoyed the library. It was a good day, but Glenda and I were tired when we got home!
April 29: Glenda and I picked up our cousin Eddie and spent the day with him at Glenda’s house. He is the son of Oscar and Virginia Davison and lives in Long Beach. In the evening we drove him back home and I got to see Long Beach at night. We ate supper in a funky little cafe decorated like the 50’s. Since Long Beach is on the ocean, I can now say I have driven from the Atlantic to the Pacific--except Glenda was the one driving!
April 30-May 1: More gabbing between Glenda and me! We sat often in her back yard watching a hummingbird work on some of her pretty flowers. Naturally, I took pictures!
May 2: I visited the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove. Years ago a minister by the name of Robert Schuler started a “drive-in” church ministry at a

He was so successful that he eventually had a well known TV program on Sunday mornings which was broadcast from an all glass church. It is a beautiful piece of architecture of beautiful grounds. I spent quite a bit of time there.
May 3: I went to church twice today! The first service was in the Crystal Cathedral. I heard the huge pipe organ (the fourth largest in the world) and the large choir. After that I went to another church of the same grounds. The minister of this church is Bobby Schuler, grandson of the original Robert Schuler. I enjoyed this service even more than the other one.
May 4: This was a big day!! Glenda’s son-in-law Robby got us tickets for the Jay Leno show! Since we didn’t have to be at the NBC studio until almost 3, we left early and did some sightseeing in Hollywood. We visited the Graumann’s Chinese Theatre, saw the handprints and footprints of stars and followed part of the trail of bronze stars. (Those stars actually go for blocks in either direction and on both sides of the streets!) We saw a crew filming a movie.
Crystal Cathedral Interior
The front of the church is seen on the weekly TV broadcast. The visible portion of the pipes for the organ is only one third of them. I tried to get pictures, but we couldn’t park anywhere near so had to take them as we rode up Hollywood Blvd. Danette would have appreciated all the trucks, dollies, grips, carts, cones, etc. As we walked around we encountered “Marilyn Monroe”, “Zorro”, “Batman”, the inevitable “Elvis” and many other costumed people. Glenda took a picture of me with “Spiderman”.
Watching the live Jay Leno show was a big thrill. He had Anderson Cooper on as his special guest and I enjoyed their part serious, part goofy exchange! Leno came out and spoke to the audience before the taping started and joked around. He is really witty and fast thinking in making replies to audience comments. I had seen him back in the early 80’s, long before he started the Tonight Show. He was the featured entertainer at the “Gator Growl”, a homecoming show for the University of Florida football team. He seems just as nice in person as he does on TV. Unfortunately, no photographs were allowed.
