Wisconsin Welcomes Us
Only Wisconsin would park a sign truck right in front of the Welcome to Wisconsin sign Day 18 - Wednesday, January 21st - Normal, IL to Home
We had seen the steadily decreasing temperatures the last two days and were not surprised as they continued to plummet the further north we went. We were surprised that we really did not see that much accumulation of snow until we actually crossed the Wisconsin border. It was humorous that just as we approached the “Welcome to Wisconsin” sign, accumulation of snow was very noticeable.
Construction on the Illinois toll part of I-39 delayed what had been a very smooth drive (surprise, surprise). Once we got through the construction, getting home was a breeze. It was nice to get in early afternoon, just in time to have a couple of beers with friends who literally welcomed us with open arms.
As we headed home, we were filled with a calm of another extraordinary trip, yet saddened with the knowledge it was our final major road trip. Our consolation was having our annual Puerto Vallarta, Mexico trip coming up in ten days. It diminished the impact of having concluded our road warrior days. This Florida Adventure has been
another incredible experience filled with sights, sounds, friends, and escapades that we will never, ever forget.
Florida Adventure Summary
We have included the final paths we took on this wonderful journey in the map section of this post. Our summary details:
Number of miles traveled: 4,130
States visited: 8 (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina)
Days on the road: 18
It’s also fun to revisit where we were on any given day:
Day 1 Indianapolis, Indiana
Day 2 Chattanooga, Tennessee
Days 3 - 7 Trenton/Chiefland, Florida (Firefighter friends ranch)
Days 8 - 12 Orlando, FL (Disney/Sea World)
Day 13 Cocoa Beach, FL (Kennedy Space Center)
Day 14 Cocoa Beach, FL (Rocket Launch)
Day 15 Orangeburg, South Carolina
Day 16 Corbin, Kentucky
Day 17 Normal, Illinois
Day 18 Home
Conclusion
Though this trip did not offer the warm weather we had hoped for, it exceeded our expectations in every other way. It was a different kind of trip than our last one. We
had the luxury of spending multiple days in one place rather than pack up and down every day. It was filled with renewed friendships and attractions galore that provided strolls down memory lane, lots of fun, plenty of laughter, and quiet time to simply enjoy the value of our time together. We thank Bob and Chris for their hospitality, Rita’s brother Charlie and his family for their expert advice to get the most out of our rather short visit to Disney, our neighbors for keeping an eye on our house, and of course, Sherryl, Greg, and the grandchildren for once again taking care of our dog, Cleo. We also thank all the positive thoughts and prayers of other family and friends.
We will back-track to posting our Route 66 trip next. We apologize to those so anxiously waiting to see how the rest of that trip went. You will not be disappointed 😊
