My graduation night was a culmination of 13 years of fun, struggles, hurts, and heals. I realized the multitude of people that have entered and left my life over the years, and was able to look back at the people that have influenced me for the good and the bad. The ceremony was great, but some of the memories were harder. All in all, I was very proud of making it, especially because some years that was a serious debate on not happening. During the ceremony, all four of us seniors were able to give a speech, share whatever we felt necessary, and then the principal gave us gag gifts to help us remember different aspects of our school career.
My graduation speech:
Friends, Family, Faculty,
I come before you today to share things that I learned in my school years. First, High school is mandatory! Some of the fun little things I have learned include 1+1=2, not 11, mixing blue and yellow make green, highlighters really can color hair, not just your school books, and Honey-Buns are essential to high school nutrition, and duct tape fixes everything!! Some of the “normal” educational things I’ve learned include how to find synonyms for small words to help my English papers sounds “more grown up,”; it is important to get to sleep before midnight, and to pay attention to the little details because those are what help develop the whole picture. Some of the life skills I’ve learned are to use positive words to encourage others; to accept my mistakes and to try to learn from them, not repeat them; and to stop complaining and to strive to do my best no matter how hard it may seem. To those of you listening and who still have to complete this mandatory phase of your life: Pay attention to what you’re told in class and read the homework because all of it is important!
However, there is something I have learned that is the most important thing in my life. I have learned that I have a friend who is concerned with everything I do; a friend to call on during the good times, and the bad; a friend who understands me no matter what I do; a friend who knows what I’m going through at all times. This friend tells me the truth about me, is genuinely happy when things go
well, and cheers me up during the trials of life. This friend is Jesus Christ. He is a friend who has carried me through the hard times of my life. He has given me great parents and spiritual authorities to help guide me. I have been blessed more than I deserve. I am very grateful for the things that God has allowed me to go through that have helped mold me into the person that I am today. Without God’s help I would not have been able to make it through trials that I have gone through during my high school years. Things get tough at times, but I have someone to help me through anything and everything. Following are some of the verses that have helped me focus on my goals.
Psalm 37:1-7~ “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of
thine heart. Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”
Proverbs 3:5, 6 ~"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."
Colossians 1:10 ~"That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God."
The most important advice I can give to all of those of you who still have yet to graduate, just remember that God is always there and willing to help, if you just ask Him. Instead of focusing on what others want, and what others think of you, just do things according to what God thinks of you, and you will then be able to please those that are also spiritually minded. Set your priorities for
joy- Jesus first, Others before yourself, and You for last
I have spent the last 13 years of my life building up to the next many. Today, as I finished registering for my college classes, I was able to look back at high school and fully enjoy how much I've grown in the last many months. Throughout the next few years of college I cannot wait to see how much more I am able to grow!
