We were welcomed into Yellowstone National Park by a parade of two buffalo marching in the road, leading us and the other vehicles. How charming! We were delighted for the first half-mile. But c’mon, we were ready to check into our RV park and their backsides were in our way. We found quickly that we best get used to animal delays and the cars which stop in the road to gawk at them, with no regard for traffic following them. Not so fun, especially for those driving motorcycles. But no more complaining. We loved so much about this park. The unusual and ever-changing landscapes are gorgeous, from prairie to mountain cliffs. There are more geysers, hot springs and other thermal features here than the rest of the planet combined. We witnessed Old Faithful spew on ... read more

After all the excitement of last night I did manage to sleep fairly well. I asked several people this morning if they heard the chorus last night and none had. Was I hearing things? They seem to all have been watching tv or already asleep. I went on a ranger led hike this morning and asked about the vocal group and he smiled and said yes indeed there was a pack of coyotes that hang around and sometimes sing. After thinking about last night I think I was more excited than scared, although there were elements of both. The coyotes must have been howling at the moon, it was gorgeous. Breakfast was a feast of oatmeal pancakes with walnuts. I woke up really hungry, maybe because it was 37 outside and a warm 57 inside. The ... read more

Today was another long day of the best and worst of Yellowstone. It started with the type of wildlife jam that knowledgeable visitors do NOT want to see. A black bear was sitting directly next to the road. While it provides an unbeatable photograph (see ) it’s also incredibly dangerous. Anyone who gets out of their car runs a high risk of becoming the bear’s scratching post. Rangers blocked the road until one arrived with a bull horn and scared the bear away. Mount Washburn After passing that incident, the road began to climb. It ran along a ridge above Antelope Valley, one of the best grizzly bear habitats in the park. People are prohibited from ent... read more
