So, just to paint a picture as to why we decided to do this long distance bicycle expedition, this is something that Fi has wanted to do for a long, long time; before we even met. When she first proposed the idea of a self-supported bicycle expedtion accross a continent, I thought she was out of her mind. I've always loved her adventurous spirit (we met while hiking separately in Peru) but I secretly hoped that she'd forget about it; she did not. As it turns out, I actually warmed up to the idea after a couple of years, and now I'm just as excited about trying this as she is. We've met several people who have done this exact thing, and have thought, "why can't we?" Now that I'm finishing my career in the U.S. ... read more

Arrived in th lovely little mountain town of Elkins today. The D'S traveled onto Cumberland,Md. This girl just had no more riding in her for today. Cold, wet feet and mountain air not a good combo! Great roads out of Charleston, though. Nice slow twisties. Parts of it felt like Qc. Bumpy. Felt good to be checked in,long run and shower done and still only 4:30. Time to see what else this pretty little town has to offer.... read more

We left the partyin' town of nashville on Saturday a little rougher than we went in. Betty Ford, here we come. Stopped in Somerset, Ky for the night and then to Charleston WV to nite. Beautiful riding thru Ky,lovely rolling hills, farms....very bucolic. And often wet. Hit some rain, sometimes heavy but not too bad. Feeling much better with my new visor. I can see!... read more

Geo: 39.2864, -80.2564We left Cleveland this morning around 6:00 am, and drove to Frank Lloyd Wright's incredible design, "Falling Water" in Mill Run, PA. What an amazing structure. I can definitely see myself living there. I wonder how a cantilevered structure over the Corrotoman River would look???After lunch in PA, we headed into West Virginia..."Wild and Wonderful" (according to the welcome sign). We ended up in Bridgeport, WV because it was 3:30 and we wanted to watch the USA soccer (football) game at 4:00. We found a Buffalo Wild Wings right off the exit, so we were happy until the USA lost.Tomorrow morning we will complete the final leg to Blacksburg. On a side note, it was a year ago today that I retired. Since then, we have driven over 11,000 miles in the RV, and visited ... read more

Got an early start, and headed on the route from Knoxville to Charleston, WV, going through Virginia and Kentucky on the way. The routes mapped out by the Power Tour are mostly scenic state highways, not necessarily the quickest ways from point A to B. Many people stopped on the way to watch or take pictures of all the classic cars going by. (It's amazing to me how excited people can get about cars!) Arrived in Charleston for the start of the daily car show. Thousands of sporty cars parked along the riverfront in Charleston--had to wait in line to get parked in the car show and started to burn out the clutch, so Steve had a stressful time, figuring out what to do about that. . . We found out there is a car medic ... read more

It's a good thing that I'm a morning person because not everyone can wake up singing at three o'clock in the morning. We arrived at the church at 4:30a.m. to weigh luggage, get passports, check suitcase sizes, and board the church bus headed to Charleston, WV.... read more

The rafting trip-- said to be "This is the Beast of the East, the most renowned whitewater in West Virginia, always in the top 3 in the nation, consistently in the top 5 in the WORLD. The Upper Gauley River drops over 335 feet in less than 13 miles. It's the essence of big-water rafting excitement creating an intense whitewater experience not recommended for the timid or inexperienced. The Upper Gauley River is continuous, big volume, technical, gut-wrenching whitewater from start to finish. Prior rafting experience and the ability to swim are recommended. " Second time rafting this river (Gauley), first time on the "New River". I went with my Dad, Step-mom, aunt, cousin and brother.... read more

The one about a long day and a sore thumb Hoosier National Forrest is less than an hour from the Eastern Daylight Time Zone. I set all my clocks and therefore my body to Eastern time yesterday so that I wouldn’t lose an hour today. I thought I was being smart and it turned out I was. I went to bed early and woke up early, and was on the road by 7:30 EDT. Hoosier National Forrest was a great place. I wish I could have done some exploring in a car to at least see the lake and marina, but I sure did enjoy the quiet and the shade. In rereading yesterday’s blog, I realized I told you my neighbor made note cards, but she gave me one in trade for the book. Somewhere I ... read more

July 10th, 2013 Today our trip started. We left @ 6:20am arrived in Elkins, WV @ 6:00pm. The day started out with a send off by son Dennis, grandson Austin and a friend Hoppy Hoy. Our granddaughter made a sign for the back of our car "PA to California or bust". The car ran super until the unexpected happened, we ran out of gas 121.4 miles into the trip (12.77 mpg), The car always gets 20 mpg. A trucker stopped, he volunteered to drive his rig one mile to gas station and fill our gas can and drive back to us, air gas mixture adjustment was 1/4 turn too rich. Next tank of gas was run with air gas mixture turned 1/4 turn leaner, result was 18.9 mpg, car ran very good. Next encounter was a ... read more
