According to Google Maps, the drive from Rifrafters Campground in Fayetteville WV to Mylan Park in Morgantown WV would be 147 miles and 2 hours and 20 minutes, so I got a fashionably late start on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Mylan Park is, essentially, a section of the parking lot that services the exhibition hall and only water and electricity are furnished. That is not a problem for me as long as I am aware and remember to dump my tanks beforehand. Upon arrival, I found access to the RV area barricaded, numerous traffic cones deployed in various patterns and a driver training program in progress for, I believe, a public utility. I made my way to a nearby picnic shelter with my laptop and began some last-minute research/updates on the attractions in the Morgantown area. ... read more

I had planned an exceptionally long stay with my aunt to avoid the Friday before and the Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend. That made my travel day a Thursday, May 24, 2018 but gave me an extra day in Atlanta. Even though Interstate highways pass within a few miles of each end of my drive, there is no direct Interstate route from Atlanta Marietta RV Resort in Marietta GA to Louisville KY, an hour north of my aunt’s home in White Mills KY. Several times I had taken I-75 to Chattanooga TN, I-24 to Nashville TN and I-65 to Sonora KY (one of the towns my mother referred to from her youth), but Nashville metro seems to be a nightmare regardless of the time of day. I will, however, give the local officials a break on ... read more

Ann: I'm being forced to write today's entry because I feel asleep in the middle of writing last nights entry. Day 3 was the shortest ride at 31 miles and the roughest one. The ride started in Cumberland, MD and ended in Pawpaw, WV. ( Yes, that is a real place. We've also seen places here that are called knobs and hollows.) We biked along the C&O Canal tow path, which is the path the mules walked on to pull boats down the canal. It was more like a goat path than a bike path. Lots of rocks, roots and mud causes lots of dodging, bouncing, and jiggling. It was beautiful country and we were riding right between the C&O canal and the Potomac River. Lots of wildlife sightings - deer, groundhogs, rabbits, heron, eagle, and ... read more

Suzanne here... We knew that Washington has too much on offer to do in one trip, but we were still sad to leave. Then again, after four days of full-on sightseeing the more relaxed pace camping offers seemed attractive. After picking up the hire car, our first stop was Walmart to buy all the camping gear we needed - cheap tent, bedding, cookware etc. We got most things we needed, but decided to stop at another branch nearer the campsite for food. We did this, and got another few bits of camping gear. In the end I reckon it cost us around about £200. Seems a lot when most of it won't make it home with us. But a hotel would be anything from £50 upwards per night, so we'll soon make that back. I'd booked ... read more

This morning we are off to the hills of West Virginia. The weather looks promising as we begin our journey west. We are actually doing a loop into West Virginia today and tomorrow before we rejoin Skyline Drive at Luray again and head south on Saturday. Since we were excited to get going and this hotel didn't have a free breakfast, we packed up the bike and were on the road by 8:00 with a stop at McDonald's for quick breakfast. Today we are headed for the Loony Bin - officially called the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, it was in operation from 1858 to 1994 as the state mental hospital. Jody has been especially looking forward to visiting here since our trip began. The Lunatic Asylum is located in Weston, WV about 175 miles west of Luray, ... read more

We only have 5 days of riding left if all goes to plan. Today is relatively short at a total distance of just over 120kms. The boys decide a sleep in is in order, as a concession we all agree to try and get ready faster. We left Harrisville and meandered up HWY-50 again, hoping for better luck than yesterday. We had a fairly uneventful morning but there was a lot gravel on the side of the road which made riding a bit difficult. At one of our stops there was a metal elephant about 1.8m tall. It had a sign on it that read Trump, Making America Great Again. Better be careful what we say around here. We had to drive through Clarkson and the route took us off the highway and through town. We ... read more
