Another early morning get up it has been getting so hot during the afternoon and with impending thunderstorms we get up and on the road early.
This morning Wednesday, July 9th was colder than usual leaving Broken Bow, NE I didn't put the liner in my jacket but it didn't take long before we needed to stop and add more layers. It had rained during the night so there were mud puddles but the road was clear. The sky had a few clouds but we stayed dry.
We found a little cafe about and hour and a half down the road right next to a rail road track. This little town receives all their mail by rail road. The little care had a red haired gentleman that was the cook, waiter and probably the dishwasher. A sign by the water jug said to help yourself and right next to that were the silverware and next to them there were piles of coffee cups. I pour Doug and I a cup and sat down, but guess I was suppose to go around to the tables and see if anyone else needed coffee (a silent rule there if you get up
and get coffee you share with everyone). One old gentleman in bib overalls and a red checkered handkerchief tucked in his bib pocket went over and preceded to make more coffee .... oops I bet I was suppose to do that also. Who knew?!?
We are getting closer to home .....
What an awesome breakfast we had and all for under $10. Doug was served a real slice of ham not a thin deli slice. While there several trains went by making the little cafe shake a little. It reminded me of an old I Love Lucy movie where Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel were traveling and ended up in an old motel right next to a rail road track.
This stretch of the road was long with a train track the whole distance. Every time a train went by the engineer blew his train whistle so of course Doug honked the Gold Wing's horn. We were on what was called Nebraska Sand Hills. Who would of thought there would be so much sand way out there in Nebraska. We have now done all of Highway 2 in Nebraska. Wahoo!!! That's done.....
Traveling on up to
see Crazy Horse. Indian head is still the only thing being worked on, but was able to get a pictures as we drove by. Onto Mount Rushmore taking pictures of the Presidents while on the back of the bike was quite a test but I think I did an OK job. I took 95 pictures just to make sure that I at least got one of the Presidents. Keep on the look out for Buffalo and wild life. Saw a cute little Prairie Dog and about 4 deer no Buffalo.
Turning around and headed to Dead Wood and Sturgis. Deadwood had grown it is like a metropolitan city now. We drove into town took pictures on the roll and head to Sturgis. We stopped downtown to see if we could get Sturgis T-shirts but didn't have the ones we wanted to got back on the bike took more pictures on the way out and head to I90 first interstate in days. Found a sign for a motel in Sundance but oh my goodness ROAD CONSTRUCTION had to wait for a pilot car so I jumped off the bike and walked over to the motel to check in while Doug
waited for the pilot car. Got a nice motel room but way too expensive. After a short cool down we hopped back onto the bike to head to town only 2 miles away for some dinner. Have to wait for the pilot car again. Doug talked to the cute little flagger. They are getting younger these days. She said that we will have road construction thru down and that it gets worse in Gillette. Poor bike didn't know it needed to be a dirt bike. The road was completely gone.
