So many things today... nancy's thesis presentation, dinner and teaching the tranky doo with Mitchell, lab with Betsy, chats about Kenya with Peter. I have so much that I could say, but I do not feel inspired to write them. I am exhausted from long days full of happy times with friends and learning. I will share a humbling moment I experienced, however. This morning, I wondered about the appearance (skin color, facial structure, etc...) of Iraqi people. So I googled them. What I found was pictures of people in pain and death. Then I googled "American people." I saw pictures of picnics, happy and healthy children, women in nice dresses... How humbled I was at the stark difference in portrayal. I feel a bit more capable of expressing myself now, though I will still keep ... read more

Tuesday and Wednesday, June 5&6 The drive from Vancouver to Seattle was superb. We drove along Highway 5, a curvy and sometimes 90 degree square around the corners of farmer's fields. It was picturesque with red roofed barns and weathered tumble down sheds. It was soothing; displaying various sheds of green from fresh yellow green dandelion to spring green deciduous leaves to turquoise new spruce growth and to dark almost black green of aged pines. Every turn in the road presented a new collage of farm field fence and far off horizon. Will had a workout today what with all the 90 degree turns 60% grades and long tight stretches of road. The state of Washington makes me wax poetic. I love it. Arriving at the city outskirts of Seattle brought an abrupt end to ... read more

To celebrate 40 years wed, Doreen and I decided to spend a month in north west USA, June-July, visiting en route our Nephew Dennis and Family in Tacoma. On 6 June, we flew British Airways (BA) from Edinburgh to Seattle via Heathrow, causing us the only major problem in our four weeks away. Judging by the hostile messages on the internet about BA, you've probably guessed that they lost my wife's suitcase, probably at Heathrow, including all her clothes and toiletries for four weeks!! Fortunately, Dennis met us at Seattle Airport and drove us to Tacoma. We decided to spend the next day in Seattle to get some replacement clothes and toiletries and to see some sights. BA gave no help at all, no telephone helpline, only an online BA missing baggage procedure that was never ... read more

UntitledWe're getting everything ready to go on our trip. The camper's packed, the animals are eagerly(?) perched inside, and all that's left to do is spend a bit more time with Paul's family and friends while we wait on some last bits of mail to come in before we can take off. We're shooting for Sunday or Monday to start heading south where it's WARMER! Tacoma itself isn't a place we're sightseeing, so exciting entries will hopefully commence on Monday!... read more

After rolling up my yoga mat and riding the rails like a new age hobo I come to find out at the end of my year of travel and wanderlust that Time magazine has nominated me “Man of The Year”. (please see three slide shows - just click on the film strips above - and the map of my trip to understand why) Tempting as it is to say “well of course”, I am compelled to say I have been humbled by this years I have traversed. Humbled to the mystery of life’s path when I just let go. Amazed at the turn of events when I quiet down long enough to listen to the inner voice. As 2006 draws to a close I find that the circle is being closed in many ways. On Christmas ... read more

For those of you reading about our upcoming Thailand and Vietnam trip who'd like to learn more about Clouded leopards, this is from the great Clouded Leopard Project website maintained by zoo keepers at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. The Clouded Leopard The clouded leopard is a medium-sized wild cat found in the forests of Asia. Little is known about the wild behavior of clouded leopards due to their extremely secretive nature. Much of our understanding of this cat’s natural history and behavior is a result of observations of them in captivity. Taxonomy While all species of cats are closely related and classified as one family, the Felidae, genetic research has shown the clouded leopard to be more closely related to the large cat species. For this reason, clouded leopards are considered a member of the ... read more

I'm working from home today due to last night's snowstorm. Schools are closed in Seattle and Tacoma, so I'm now just checking out the weather in Hanoi, Vietnam and Bangkok, Thailand. It looks like it'll be about 80-90 degrees in Thailand and 70-80 degrees in Vietnam!! Since we're camping in hammocks for a couple of days in Thailand, I'm getting my camping gear together. I have a sleeping bag with a compression sack, and a day ago I purchased a new headlamp-style flashlight. The coordinator in Thailand says that if we're camping at the substation out in the forest, we're in the area where a number of wild animals have been spotted - including tigers!! This is going to be a huge adventure!... read more
