Seattle

Additional maps: Seattle!

We rode an enormous ferry into Seattle from Kingston with the wind in our hair. After shower-less camp sites, we were delighted to be received in a cozy Seattle bungalow by the most gracious and entertaining of hosts, K and G and their two adorable beagles, George and Elroy. Both dogs are sweet boys. Elroy is charming, but he has an amazing reach that allows him to gobble up the insides of sandwiches in progress when one turns their back to reach for the mustard. He was quite pleased with himself, but so were we to be in a real home, no rocky tent floor; instead there were hot showers, laundry, filtered drinking water and lovely hostesses.

Our first night we dined on awesome Thai food with K and G after a short stroll through the neighborhood. Later, Texas Red, J. Karankawa and Generalissimo kept up their dive bar travel tradition after a great recommendation by K and visited the local Comet Bar, said to have hosted Kurt Cobain in its early days. A six man band from California covered Billy Joe Shaver's "Black Rose." The band was technically good, but we'd heard their ilk before. A little Texas from CA way in Seattle, was however, welcome. After drinks we headed for home--in a real home! Thanks K and G!

On our second day in Seattle we awoke to freshly made coffee, and post-it notes and maps to help us on our Seattle adventure. It felt a little like our moms had left us notes in our lunch box, but for breakfast instead. First, we explored the aquarium courtesy of the long lost relatives of J. Karankawa. We got to pet starfish and sticky sea anemones which highly amused Texas Red and Generalissimo. Next Pike's Market dazzled us with its fresh flower bouquets, fine foods and fruits.

Sadly, J. Karankawa and Generalissimo had to part ways with Texas Red at the airport and little Bea decided she could make one more Pike's market trip to the original Starbucks for J. Karankawa's loyal friend and house sitter whose nerves had suffered greatly from the Shenanigans of Sake the cat. Hint to readers: when your gas tank is slightly low, do not, we repeat, do not park on a 90 grade in a parking lot even if the natives are doing it. It might delay your departure time to Crater Lake during a record Seattle heatwave.

Generalissimo: "I think I like jaywalking. Especially in this city."
Jenny Karankawa: "Thanks a lot. I'm gonna get my ass kicked in this bar. I'm head to toe Old Navy."
Texas Red: "Look--there's dollar bills on the ceiling. This place is awesome!"
