Top ten things you must do in Seattle. Have you done them?
1. Space Needle (from the 1962 World's Fair)
2. Pike Place Market
3. Ride the Great Wheel
4. World Class Wines (over 800 wineries in Washington)
5. Seafood (halibut was fabulously good)
6. Take a seaplane ride
7. Chihuly Garden and Glass ( nice, but overrated)
8. Local craft brews
9. Seattle's colorful neighborhoods
10. Ride a Ferry
So, there are some obvious omissions:
Tour the Boeing plant and visit the Museum of Flight
Eat at a Tom Douglas restaurant (almost all of our meals)
Have a cup of coffee (anywhere, anytime)
Shop at Uwajimaya (we walked there Thursday)
Ride the new light rail (from airport to downtown) or Seattle Monorail
Walk in the rain without an umbrella (no rain)
Visit the U.
Of course, there are too many things to list. And it is difficult to limit the list to only ten. What I can tell you, most definitely, is that Seattle is fun, never boring, always changing, with the strangest politics this side of
Berkeley.
Add this to the list. Serious Pie pizza by Tom Douglas. Today's special pizza was fresh tomatoes, covered with prociutto, and mildly hot baby green peppers. It was preceeded by a marinated kale salad with pine nuts, garlic, and shaved parmesan. The other pizzas were not too shappy either:
1. Buffalo mozzarella, tomato sauce, fresh basil.2. Yukon gold potato, rosemary, pecorino romano.3. Sweet fennel sausage, roasted peppers, provolone (my favorite).4. Roasted seasonal mushrooms, truffle cheese.5. Penn cove clams, pancetta tesa, lemon thyme.6. Soft eggs, smoked prosciutto, ecorino sardo, arugula.7. Lamb sausage, whipped ricotta, saracena olives, farm greens.
I would like a slice of each one. But save room for dessert: Hogue Ranch apple crostada with nocino caramel, and vanilla ice cream, a peach cannoli with zaya rum caramel and butter pecans, or chocolate budino, or a Serious root beer float, or in the event of failure above, a scoop of tiramisu gelato, peach buttermilk or raspberry-jasmine sorbet!!!
I skipped dessert and went to the Experience Music Project, both because I enjoy music, and also to pay my respects to Sir Jimi Hendrix. I love that place. If you love music, it is a must stop next time you
are here in Seattle. And I always stop by the great Seattle Public Library for some poetic inspiration.
The Jon Lovitz comedy show at The Parlor in downtown Seattle was interesting. He has a very wimpy, almost sissy little voice, but likes to lace his stories with the "F" word. The two warm up acts were actually better. He played the part of "Gary" in a Seinfeld episode where he told George about getting a hair piece due to a cancer that he did not really have. I would give the show a big "C", since my old buddy, Barry the V from Cape Town would insist on giving the Jewish comedian apassing grade!
I have some dear friends celebrating birthdays today, Colleen, Beth, and Kathleen. May you each have many more healthy and happy birthdays ahead.
Our last full day in Seattle will be celebrated in great weather, again today. Breakfast at Lola, lunch at Tilikum Place Cafe with Lauren, a big dinner tonight at Lola with a few friends, and home tomorrow for Buddy.
