The semester is flying by, luckily pretty much without any hicups. I am taking interesting classes that (yay!) have almost no homework, so I have tons of free time to do random stuff. So far I have been doing adventure trips with the outdoor rec (kayaking and white water rafting), hanging out with friends, going to football games (we wont mention those though) and I published a book of picutures from Zanzibar. Should be getting the final copy in the mail this week, and I am really excited to see how it turned out. I have also been doing lots of reading for fun. Just finished a fabulous book about the environmental history and current urban planning in Washington State. I am living with the same wonderful group of women this year, there are 4 of ... read more

Home sweet home on the Palouse! It is so good to be back, living my amazing house with some of the best girls I know, seeing friends, a new set of classes, adventures, and new people to meet. It is going to be a great senior year. My housemates and I went to the Gorge for the Jack Johnson concert the weekend before classes started. I had never been there before and was totally floored by how amazing this venue is. Thousands of music fans poured into this natural amphitheatre, spreading blankets on the grass until it was a solid patchwork hillside overlooking the Columbia River. Spectacular. The Gorge is miles away from the next semblance of civilization, so that means no noise or lights, just music, hills, sky and water. The concert held another special ... read more

I've been asked for an itinerary so here you go: One thing were probably doing in every city is having dinner at a local pub. My uncle said this was the cheapest way to eat out a lot of time. Tim and I want to try some of the regional beers and wines. If you know of anything good let me know. July 30th - overnight flight to London July 31st - we're sleeping off our jet lag near the airport where we catch our flight to Paris August 1-2 - Paris. The hotel prices were astronomical if you wanted somewhere that was even just safe, clean and close to things. We intend on going to the Louvre and picnicking in front of the Eiffel tower. We want to go somewhere fun for dinner both nights, ... read more

Figuring Things Out At the very moment I am contemplating what Italy will be like. Sure I have seen the movies and read the books on the country, but how much can you learn from observing rather than actually doing/being. When I was figuring out which place in the wide-open world I would want to travel to, I could have picked somewhere that spoke English as a first language. This however probably would have been selling myself short. So then I looked at France, where I would be able to communicate at an elementary level comfortably. I have never been outside of North America before so then why would I pick somewhere that would make things easier. I realize how cliché it is for American students to go to Italy to study abroad but it ... read more

I haven't had a snow day since high school and neither has WSU. It's apparently been like 5 years since they canceled class and it took forever for them to decide to close today. Apparently 16 inches of snow just isn't enough to cancel class for sure...it could go either way. Crazy Pullman people!! And it just keeps on snowing...... read more

"Roll on, Columbia, roll on Your power is turning our darkness to dawn So roll on, Columbia, roll on." - Woody Guthrie The lyrics of Washington State's official song came through my head this morning as I crossed the river on I-90, marvelling at it's scale. I'd just woken up after a long night spent curled-up in the bed of my truck at a truckers' pull-off. The sun had just reached a height where it's rays would hit the water, and the river sparkled like it might do in some great poetry. This all made me think quite a bit of Woody Guthrie and his song, but especially about his travels around the U.S.A., figuring out just what exaclty it was and just who exactly we it's people were. I felt especially close to Guthrie this ... read more
