Leaving Portland late on a Saturday night set us up to catch an early tide from Olympia to Pt Townsend in one day. The first leg of our trip is spent unpacking and stowing all the food and supplies and Peter plans for the week of maintenance coming up. Unfortunately, like many boaters now dealing with unusually warm, our propeller & rudder made for an inviting base for barnacles that slowed us down considerably so we hung on the hook in Pt Ludlow's inner harbor next to the "Twins" a pair of natural, uninhabited islands (by humans that is). At least the calm weather and clear skies gave us a joyful start for our 2019 IPDP Summer Cruise with a light breeze behind us hopefully foretelling an easy, safe journey ahead.
The first week of our trip we planned to be in the Boat Haven, Pt Townsend, in drydock with Ama on stanchions surrounded by ladders and planking making our annual maintenance easier for painting topsides, rails and varnishing the brightwork. Two years ago, Peter promised never to paint the bottom himself again so our BUM friend (Bottoms Up Maintenance) put a fresh coat of copper-free bottom paint in keeping
with our focus to keep the Inside Passage clean. Our maintenance schedule has over 30 tasks, many taking 2-3 hours (some 8 hours)! The most audacious being the ones that involve hiring a crane operator to hoist us to the top of the mast in a boson's seat to replace the anchor light, improve rigging and add new blocks for flags & banners. I end up spending an inordinate amount of time in the car, running to & from, including to Linwood by way of the Kingston Ferry for an anchor adjustment. Two fresh graduates of the NW School of Wooden Boats help daily, scaping, painting, running new wire, and all around helping especially reducing the number of times up & down the ladder.
The best part of doing maintenance in Port Townsend is spending time with some of our favorite people, Matt & Sasha, BFFs! Their new home is already a familiar welcoming place, with Sasha's glorious gardens surrounding this unique structure of an old classic one-story home now sitting on top a new first floor. It's perfect for their gracious lifestyle with extra bedrooms and eating spaces comfortably arranged inside & out.
Notable Activities: The 2019
Yahtzee competition has begun with Peter winning the first round. Our newly-fashioned IPDP streamer gets it's first airing, proudly hung from Ama's main mast.

The IPDP is a grassroots effort to decarbonize the marine and light displacement maritime ecosystem of the NW’s Inside Passage over the next decade through demonstration, awareness, education, and strategic partnering. The IPDP’s three principal foci are on clean, very low carbon propulsion; clean, renewables-based lubricants, 100%!t(MISSING)ruly renewable port electric grids, and vessel shore-power for charging.
