Still in Leavenworth awaiting "travel day". 3/30/08 Everything has been thought of and we have decided to do this trip with just a carry on bag each. From blogs that we have read, some back packers like to limit the weight of there packs to less than 33 lbs. We are allowed 50 lbs on the plane per bag... We shall see... We have had snow the last 5 days in a row. Will be nice to get out of snow country and enjoy some heat for a change. All for now, J&A... read more

After a stunning, three-hour ride through the Cascade Mountain range, we arrived early this afternoon in Leavenworth, "The Bavarian Village". Leavenworth has an interesting history, tracing its foundations back to the early settlers. Its main economies of logging and agriculture suffered in the first half of the century, following the economic depression and war years. In the 1960's, community leaders began a transformation of the town to attract tourists, and Alpine-like facades were added to the buildings. Today, the village is a big tourist attraction year round, boasting superb shops (none of the usual trashy-tourist souvenirs here), lots of good eating and watering holes, and a large number of hotels (including the inevitable Hotel Edelweiss). We can recommend our hotel, “Howard Johnson”, which is excellent and has free Wi-Fi and internet access. Later in the year ... read more

This town is called little Bavaria. I recommend to all you Germans reading this to pay a visit to this town. This town used to thrive on loggong and business brought by the advent of the railroad. However once the trees became scarce, the town found itself in a deep depression. Not knowing what to do, the town aldermen got together and came up with the controversial idea of remodeling the town after the bavarian theme. In the end, everyone ended up remodeling their building like a chalet without having to be forced to do it.
