08-10-15 and 08-11-15 Montana to Washington
The drive along I 90 was unlike any interstate I've been on. For miles it wound through the mountains following Clark Fork River. The road crossed the Clark Fork 9 times, can't imagine what that must have cost having to build all those bridges, let alone carving the road through the mountains. Several times the speed limit went from 75 mph to 55 mph because of the turns. As I got closer to Coeur d'Alene in Idaho there was more traffic and more settlements. I didn't realize how far I had been from civilization until the traffic increased and so did my tension. I had to counsel myself, it's just traffic. Right before the Washington border I headed north on highway 41 which was a 2 lane 60 mph road through forests and occasional settlement to the town of Newport where I headed SE on highway 2. Thanks goodness for the gps or I would never have found the campground. This campground is part of the Thousand Trails (TT) organization, the one I stay in when in Orlando in the winter. I got the extra zone entitling me to stay in the
North West area. I pay one fee a year and I can stay at their campgrounds for no extra charges. The more you use it the less per night it costs so I hope to use it at least 4 weeks while I'm out here.
I am not fond of the campground though. It's tucked back in the middle of the woods with a very small lake that looks more like a puddle. It's at least 15 miles to town to buy anything so I'm really glad I have the car.
On top of that, it's really hot out here. I've been enjoying the cool mountain air of Montana, guess I have to pay my dues. It's 97 today and 100 tomorrow and Thursday but then a cool front comes through and will be in the low 80s from Friday on.
I did some exploring today going north on highway 2 into Idaho to the town of Priest River following the Peno Oreille River to Sandpoint, ID. It was a pretty ride, I found a park to have my lunch overlooking the river where the local people were enjoying the warm temperatures swimming in the river. There
were lots of boats out there pulling tubes and water skiers.
This area is mainly a suburb of Spokane and summer resort area along with extensive logging operations. I passed a sawmill with huge stacks of trees being watered down in the yard.
Oscar was with me and even though I had the air conditioning on he was not in the mood for a road trip. I had pretty much had it by then too so we headed back to camp. I wanted to stop at the grocery while in town but couldn't leave the poor boy in the car for even 5 min so I'll make a trip without him tomorrow.
I'll do some house cleaning which is badly needed and then do some wash tomorrow. I'm going to get up in the wee hours of the morning to see if I see any meteors. The weather looks clear for tonight so I might get lucky.
This area is very different from Montana. There are mature forests all over and the area looks much greener despite the fact that they have had a drought for a while. It is also much more populated and everybody
is in a hurry. Poo.
Not to worry though, I am not near any fires.
