08-13-15 Short tour to Seredepity
On Tues. morning at 2 am, I went to the ball field to see the Perseid s Meteor Shower. It was pretty dark around here which is what I wanted, but stumbling around I had to be careful. I set up my chair and waited for the show to begin and my eyes to become accustomed to the dark. The stars were brilliant with the milky way clearly visible. It was really hard for me to make out the constellations because there were too many stars blurring the lines. I didn't have to wait long before a meteor streaked by, so fast and faint I wondered if I really saw it. During a meteor shower you usually can't look in any one direction so when there is a big viewing area you just have to adjust your eyes to see as much sky as possible then focus when you see one. I was there 45 min and saw 9. The peak is actually Wed. night so I'll try again.
Wednesday was so hot I just left the dog in the camper most of the day and did some chores. Washed clothes here
at the campground then went into Newport to get a few groceries. Read my book, talked to a neighbor and just relaxed.
Thursday morning at 12:30 am I got up and went outside at my campsite to see the meteor show. I set up my lounge chair to get as much sky as possible and waited. I saw 5 in 1/2 hr but this time they were brighter and lasted longer, one had a blue/silver tail. That was very pretty one. I was really tired so I went back to bed.
I saw the Leonidas Meteor shower with Jeremy about 10 years ago and the conditions were perfect. We saw 476 meteors in 1 1/2 hrs, one meteor even skipped 3 times like a stone on a lake. I was spoiled by that experience and expect or at least hope to see that again. I think it was one in a lifetime deal.
This morning I dragged myself out of bed after 8 am and decided to take a short sight-seeing ride north of here. I left Oscar home in the cool camper and headed north on rt. 211. I stopped for gas a few miles up
the road and there were 3 motorcyclists there getting gas too. We started talking and here one used to live in PA near Jim Thorpe, did I know where that was.
They were coming from Sturgus, SD where the biggest bike rally was held last week with over 600,000 (yes, all those 0) bikers attending. They camped in farmers fields or anywhere they could find. So these 3 didn't have enough and were on their way to Canada to another rally there. One of the guys really liked Petunia's eye lashes and wanted one for his bike. Whatever turns you on.
I continued north and this particular road must have been very bad. The state came along and tarred and stoned it. I remember when PA used to do that, maybe still does but in this heat it's really nasty until the tar solidifies and holds the stones. I didn't get tar on the car but it sure was dusty.
The road wound along the Pend Oreille River with tree covered rolling hills and farms dotting the countryside. I went through little towns Usk, Cusick, Tiger Museum and finally Lone, the kind of towns that if you
blink you miss them. At Lone I had to backtrack a mile to find the bridge that went across the river to Seredepity so I could go down the opposite side. The bridge was painted a VERY bright orange as there are low flying aircraft and sometimes fire fighting helicopters that get water out of the river. Picture.
This road was not as busy and tree lined so it was cooler and more enjoyable. I'm sure the scenery would have been prettier if it wasn't so hot with the haze hanging in the air.
I got back home, took Oscar out for a short walk then settled in the shade to read my book.
I'm going to do most of my packing up tonight so I can get an early start tomorrow, there are supposed to be strong T storms in the afternoon and I want to be all settled in my new campground by then. The heat wave is supposed to break tomorrow, hooray!
