Pride of ownership
Lots of cute yard displays along the way. 95% of the yards were immaculate with freshly mowed grass. I’m sitting here on a rocking chair,( They really like rocking chairs here in Virginia), on the deck of our cabin waiting for the rain to at least slow down a bit!
Bruce is already out in it making his way to Abington,( 12 miles), where he will pick up a rental car and drive back to his brother ‘s house.
Although this was a scheduled day off, I am eventually going to ride about 10 miles up to Glade Springs where I will finish the day resting the legs for tomorrow’s brutal climb up to Rosedale, Va. It is reported to be one of the toughest climbs on the Trans America Bicycle Route.
Yesterday was a fabulous day on the bicycles. We rode 62 miles through some of the most beautiful country we have ever seen. About half of the ride was alongside a fast moving creek and we got to listen to the sounds of pure mountain heaven. Running water, rustling trees and chirping birds while taking in the finest of Mother Nature!
I took some pictures along the way to try and capture some of what we saw.
About lunch time around Sugar Grove,
we stopped at a community fundraiser for the Smith County Ruritan Club. As we have found everywhere we go, the people were as down to earth and nice as anyone could be. I had the Burger and water for $2.50 and Bruce the Hot Dog and water for $2.00. We tipped them very generously!
After that nourishment, we climbed for about 15 miles at a very gentle 2-5% through the Appalachian Mountains alongside the Appalachian Trail. Once over the top we had a 10-15 mile descent into Damascus where I am this morning.
Once we arrived, we wandered around searching for the Damascus Brewery only to find it would open about 6PM. ( Do you see a pattern here?)
We then Google Mapped our Damascus Cabins, found Cabin 3 right on the river, used the supplied combination and made ourselves at home. About an hour later after two showers and our stuff unpacked, a gentleman knocked on the door to tell us we were in his cabin.
We debated the issue for 45 minutes and several phone calls, to finally ascertain that we were supposed to be at The Damascus RIVER VIEW Cabins a couple of
Perfect pavement
Running water, rustling leaves and chirping birds.
About 2-5% up grade for 8 miles. bonus miles across town.
We finally got settled, and went to the Damascus Brewery to taste the WORST Beer ever. We left with two 1/2 full glasses! ( You beer connoisseurs can leave that one off your bucket list!)
Off to the local Pizza Place and grocery store to finally have Pizza and Beer on the porch about dusk.
All is well that ends well.
We both agreed that the last five days have been really special.
I am sorry to see Bruce go..... he must be soaked by now!
OH, AND THE TITLE TODAY.
Does anybody have pull with the International Brotherhood of Logging Truck Drivers?
Everyone along the way is a courteous as possible giving us ample room when they pass except the #%€*!! Logging Truck Drivers. They seem bound and determined to make us soil ourselves as they pass close abeam at full speed.
