Have been a little slow getting another message up, but have been busy traveling, visiting with friends, and trouble getting the wi-fi to work. So let me update you on the trip to so far. We had a safe trip to St. Louis where we got Sarah and Jay at the airport and went to our niece's, Abbey, graduation. The ceremony was very nice with an excellent speaker. Then all the family went to dinner at the Big Sky Cafe (shades of Montana) and finished the evening with dessert at the Chocolate Bar in Lafayette Square. Was great to see everyone and join Abbey (Dr. Kennedy now) in the celebration. The picture is Megan, Dr. Abbey (in the middle) and Sarah following the ceremony.
We then took a flying trip back to the Lake of the Ozarks for the weekend to visit family and then back to St. Louis to get Sarah and Jay to the airport. The Lake of the Ozarks picture is our son Jay and David's brother Bill practicing with tomahawks. When we get home David can tell you how he placed on tomohawk directly in the handle of his previous throw without dislodging the first
one. What a mighty woodsman. We then met our friend Don and caravaned south on the first leg of our trip east. This section was the barbecue trail starting with dinner at the Hickory Log in Dexter, MO (southwest corner of the state called the Bootheel). Stayed overnight there and then went on to Memphis for lunch at the Interstate Barbecue advertised on the Food Channel as 2nd best in the country. The food was good, but this group says Bryants in Kansas City is better. We then headed east to the New River area of West Virginia where we hoped to do a 1/2 day river raft trip. Didn't pan out so headed on to Warrenton, VA where Don's son Brett and his family live. We spent Memorial Day weekend with them camping in the Shenandoah State Park. Beautiful area with our campground right on the river. On Sunday four of us, including me, went on a 12 mile kayak float down the river. Beautiful weather, great views, and some rapids, but not too intense. That was the first 6 miles. The last 6 miles were in a steady rain and not so much fun, but we made it.
A nice hot shower at the campground and a few glasses of wine helped considerably.
The next day David, Don and Brett did a 4 mile float with no rapids and beautiful weather the entire way. What is wrong with this picture?
On Tuesday, May 29, we left Warrenton and headed south to Charlottesville where we will stay for several days. Yesterday we visited Jamestown. Spent a good part of the day there. With this year being the 400th anniversary of the settlement, they have done a lot to expand the exhibits. Very well done and interesting. Will visit Monticello today and then visit a college friend tomorrow and Saturday. Sunday we head north to Gettysburg and Baltimore.
US to Europe Comparison
Countryside in eastern US reminds us a lot of Germany - very green and lots of agriculture. It differs from Germany in that we go long stretches between towns while in Germany you pass a village every few kilometers.
I have yet to see a toilet brush! In Europe, every stall in every restroom had its own toilet brush. Nary a one in the US. And every toilet here has the same flushing system as opposed to Europe where it was always a guessing game as to what new system you would find.
The GPS we have this year is a much better system than the one we had last year. It is working great and is a handheld one so much easier to manage than needing to use the computer. It is also easy to carry with us which we do. We are not going to risk having it stolen. This is the news for now. Hope all is well with you. Barb

Glad to hear from you!
I have been checking that Travelblog site and was wondering what had happened to you! Glad to hear it wasn't a mechanical problem with your vehicle. Dr. Abbey in what field? Our niece just got her doctorate in pharmacy from the U of MT. Hope all continues to go well on your trip and I look forward to future blogs!
