We left Hoover, AL with temps in the 70s and bright skies. Our route changed in Birmingham to I 85 where we took a more northerly route toward 95. Our destination was Durham, NC but we couldn't find a campground that would accept us. There were 2 that rejected us because of the dobermans, something about their insurance not accepting viscous breeds. Obviously they haven't met a doberman lately. The only other campground in town was not accepting one night stays. It was truly a mystery to us but we had no other choice but to stay at a Walmart parking lot.
When I mentioned to Ginnie that there was a super Walmart in Chapel Hill she said that's where my cousin lives. Ginnie didn't know that we were near Chapel Hill and was excited to contact her cousin to say we were in town. So her cousin Sally and her husband Frank met us at the Wally World Resort and we sat under a tree on lawn chairs enjoying the fresh evening air and each others company.
We were able to walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner and then they came inside the
camper and we talked for a while longer. It was a very pleasant evening and after walking the dogs we went to sleep and had a very restful night. I felt very safe having the 2 big dobermans to protect us and Watson was there to alert his back-up crew.
Tuesday morning we were up and out of our campsite by 8 and traveled down the road to a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Treating ourselves to a nice breakfast sounded like a good idea and there was a Cracker Barrel about 10 min away close to the 85 entrance ramp. The directions from Google maps were followed and suddenly we found ourselves in front of an old railroad bridge with an 11 ft clearance. That was not going to do at all, we need 11' 5" to clear so luckily there was a road to turn left on and we followed that for a short time til we realized it was a dead end. When you are driving a 31' motorhome and pulling a car you can't just turn around anywhere especially since you can't back up. There was a business at the end of the road and luckily
they had plenty of turning room in the back which they graciously gave us permission to do.
OK, so we're turned around and going back but now we had to figure out an alternate route to breakfast. Thank goodness Google took care of that for us and in about 10 min we were at the resturant looking at the menu.
By 10 we were on I 85 heading north with full bellies and happy faces. The ride was uneventful, thankfully, and by 2 we were in Bowling Green at a campground Ginnie uses when she goes to FL. By then the weather had changed to rain and cold and we got set up quickly and hunkered down for the night. We did some acounting for the trip, talked to friends on the phone, had dinner then called it a night.
We have had quite a journey. I'll figure out the milage tomorrow for the trip and the cost of gas but it has been an adventure. The west is so far away but I can't wait to get back. We had the first rain today since the middle of Sept and it has to be a cold
miserable rain. It's always sad to see the end to a trip especially one that has been so great. But there are other things to look forward to in the near and not so near future that will grab our attention until we travel again.
The dogs hibernated the minute they heard the rain fall and have been switching beds this afternoon. I have included a picture of Alfy, 65 lbs, in Watson's bed and Watson, 12 lbs, in Alfy's bed. Just a little comical.
