Got a long weekend off from work so I decided to explore South Texas. I have lived in Texas for 14 years yet I have not seen much of it. My style of travel is anything off the beaten path so why not check out the towns close to the Texas-Mexican border? Despite the little research I came up with and friends' advice against going to a border town, I decided to give it a go. I wanted to see all that Texas has to offer before I leave. Day 1 - Thursday July 11, 2013 Destination: Corpus Christie (3 hours drive from Houston in my '09 Toyota Camry) headed for the USS Lexington. Private parking lot right across from the Lex charged $5 all day parking. I met this retired sheriff deputy from Dallas who ... read more

Monday, February 4th. Motel 6 on South Padre Island Temperature is 68 degrees at 8:20 with a light misty rain falling and dark rain clouds overhead. Had breakfast first thing at a nearby Mc Donald's. With some sort of sign ordinance in this community, it was hard to spot the "golden arches" as they were on the ground, instead of their usual place, in the air. Noticed many hotels/motels signs were also hard to find. The island is particularly narrow at this end and makes everything squishy and on top of one another. Drove north for a little ways on P100 to the parking lot of the Convention Center. When we were at the King Ranch, the guide, when she heard we were heading in this direction, told us there was a rare 6" Ferruginous Pygmy ... read more

So here we are in South Padre Island (SPI) and paradise. I had read about SPI for months and all they say is true. The island is 113 miles long and the longest sand island in the US...maybe the world. We are out in the Gulf of Mexico just west of Brownsville. You have to go across a 3 mile bridge to get from the mainland of S. TX to SPI. Our motel. for 15 days, is right in the middle (east to west) of the small city of SPI which is on the very southern tip of the island of SPI. From our motel, we can walk 5 minutes west and be at the Gulf and 5 minutes east and be at the Laguna Madre. The water is beautiful and warm. The weather is great. ... read more

Trip to Texas Plains & South Padre Island This was an unplanned trip since we usually stay home for the winter and go away in April. I had been ill and had just had enough of winter! We left Sunday February 13 and had a good 800 km drive to Findlay Ohio. The crossing at Detroit is now so simple. You drive from the toll both directly to Interstate 75 south without having to find your way through some of Detroit’s worst neighbourhoods. On the second day we drove 915 km over 11 hours. The reason for this was so that we could stay at Microtel in Jackson Tennessee. Microtel has won many awards as the best hotel in its category for years and it has been our favourite for about 8 years. Unfortunately the Jackson ... read more

A week in Corpus Christi is a week too much. We are both so glad to have left. We got our van back late Friday afternoon and headed south Saturday morning....not too soon. We've landed in South Padre Island....about 20 miles this side of the border. If all goes well, we'll be crossing over sometime tomorrow. We don't know what to expect at the border and not wanting to be held up anymore, we hired a broker. I'm sure we could cross over ourselves and fill out all the necessary paperwork...but we're loaded up with 2 dogs and a 12' trailer full of "stuff". That just makes for more papers to be filled out and more questions to be answered. I do believe a broker will make our lives a little simpler...we hope. We'll see. In ... read more

Well apparently everyone is chomping at the bit for an update to our travelblog. I made that up. We haven't done anything to speak of lately except hang out at Sandpipers, play tennis and take in a couple movies. By the way, Gran Torino and Valkrie are very good, especially Gran Torino. This is the friendliest group of people and we are amazed at how inclusive they are regardless of how long we have been here. We were mobbed the minute we came through the gate with greetings and invitations. Very warm and impressive. They have a very busy calender here and everyone seems to take part in everything from talent shows (in which Marilyn was a big hit) to potlucks to movie nights to blackjack night etc, etc. Today however we went off property ... read more

Mexican Auto Insurance Sanborn is probably the most recommended and knowledgeable provider of Mexican insurance. Vehicle valued @ ~$14K-USD for 10 consecutive days was ~146.00USD. Mary Stavers was our agent. Their office is located in Brownsville @ xxxxxxx. Click on this link xxxxxx for a map. We also picked up their proprietary travelogue publications for Northern Mexico and the Yucatan. We chase our start date for the insurance coverage to coincide with our planned border crossing on Sunday 12/16 @10am. We probably could have saved some $$ by not purchasing 10 days of coverage but opting for fewer days and calling or emailing them for an extension if necessary. Hice mas o menos una milla y media y ... read more
