November 8, 2014 (Saturday) Mama and I are spending the week in the Hill Country. We are staying on Canyon Lake which is near New Braunfels between Austin and San Antonio. I picked her up this morning about 10, we then went to Denton and dropped off some DVDs I had made for my cousin. We stopped in West to eat lunch and to see where the fertilizer plant had exploded back in April 2013. The explosion was on the Northeast side of town. For some reason when it happen I was thinking it was on the South side of town. All the homes except for 1 had been torn down and a lot of new homes had been built. Mama had seen a show on TV about a café in West that was supposed to ... read more

November 9, 2014 (Sunday) I had told mama if she wanted to go to church this morning to bring her some church clothes so she brought some. Last night I searched online for a church and found the Little Church in the Wildwood so that is where we went this morning. I enjoy visiting different churches, some of them can be an experience. This church had about 50 people in attendance. For such a small congregation, they had a wide verity of musical instruments. They had the standard piano, organ, 2 guitars and a drum set. In addition to that they had a cello, bongo drums and a harmonica player. There was a young boy there probably about 14 that reminded me of a young lawyer back in Abraham Lincoln’s days. He was dressed in black ... read more

Gruene, Texas!!! Apparently its not really a place but a neighborhood in New Braunfels, TX. Still, its a shoppers paradise for those looking for antiques and Texas swing music. Fabled Gruene Hall is the center of it all. It is surrounded by shops and antique places and wine tasting. Colby really enjoys the wine tasting. I just watch, and drive him home afterwards. We went at the height of Christmas Season so the place was all merry and decked the hall out. It’s a fun place for some easy going shopping. You never know what you'll find in the antique shops! I apparently found a Baby Jesus in Eyeliner.... read more

Needless to say, we weren't impressed with what Austin had shown us, so we packed up and left for New Braunfels and the Gruene (pronounced green) Dance Hall. We stayed at the River Ranch RV park just under I-35. That sounds bad, but with the A/C running full time (did I mention that it's 100 degrees and at least 85% humidity???), you didn't hear the traffic noise, and the park is right along the river. Once we got situated, we headed for Gruene, just outside of New Braunfels. Apparently it had turned to a Ghost Town (although the Gruene Hall never closed), but had been revitalized, and now it's a nice little town full of antique shops and restaurants. We chose The Gristmill (which was actually the old gristmill) for dinner...it was ok, but nothing fabulous. ... read more
