Luckenbach General Store and Post office
November 12, 2014 (Wednesday)

It is hard to believe the week is over half over. I will be so glad when I can retire and travel full time.

It was very cold today. A cold front came thru yesterday and the high was 44 today with a wind chill factor in the 30s. I had known it was supposed to get cold today and be cold for the rest of the week so, today and the rest of the week will mostly be driving and just seeing the countryside.

When we left Canyon Lake this morning we headed toward Luckenbach. It was a very pretty drive but no place to stop and take pictures. We stopped in Luckenbach and looked around some. Inside the general store there was a stuffed animal in one of the cases. (I can’t remember what it was now). The lady that was working there said told a couple from Canada who was also in the store that he came from Himalaya. They were asking her how they got him. She told them they found “him a laying” down the road. J Now that is funny. J

We left Luckenbach and headed to Fredericksburg. On the east side of Fredericksburg we passed a historical site so we stopped. It was Fort Martin Scott. I would recommend stopping here. They have signs telling about the lives of the soldiers and the way some of them were punished. One soldier was found guilty of drunkenness and was stripped and branded with a D on his hip. One was found guilty of desertion his pose and was sentenced to 50 lashes with a rawhide whip while tethered to a ball and chain and forfeited his pay for 6 months.

We left the Fort and headed to downtown Fredericksburg. We went into several of the shops just looking around. We went into one store that had all kinds of different sauces, jellies, preserves, relishes, dips and fudge. They had a sample jar sitting out of every type of item they sold. We tried a couple of them. The best one I tried (besides the mint chocolate fudge) was a Sweet Potato Pecan Butter preserve.

We left Fredericksburg and headed south to Comfort. We drove into the downtown historical district but didn’t stop at

any of the stores. Other than 2 antique stores they didn’t have much. We left Comfort and headed back to Canyon Lake. We have not had time to drive around the lake any so, since it was still light we explored the area. The lake is really low. We saw a lot of deer. I think mama counted about 35 in one area. Most of the road into the lake were closed. We didn’t know if they were closed because the lake is so low or because it was later in the day or because it is November.
