Thanksgiving
Carving the turkey Wow didn't realise it had been so long since I checked in. A lot has been going on. We had Thanksgiving, Black Friday, I got a job and I moved into an apartment.
Thanksgiving was fun we had it at the hostel. Two americans cooked the turkey and all the trimmings and about 20 international tourists were there to join in the feast. I tried pumpkin pie for the first time. it's edible but tastes a lot better when its covered in whipped cream....Pumpkin cheesecake on the other hand is DELICIOUS!
I started working for JC Penney's (similar to Harris Scarfe) the week before thanksgiving as a Christmas casual. I decided it was so late in the year it really wasn't worth looking into getting a full time job until the new year and apparently if you work in retail you get store discount so it was the perfect opportunity especially since I have an entire apartment to furnish. I also had to spend over $1000 on getting the car fixd because it was leaking coolant that expense certainly wasn't in the budget and the worst part is it's still not fixed if anything it's worse......Totally frustrating yet completely
normal for this part of the world. If you look at how cheaply american cars are put together you can understand why so many people have problems with there cars. I know at least 5 people who have been without a car for a day or two in the past week and I don't know that many people. I'm really starting to wish I'd splurged on a new car instead of doing the responsible thing and saving the extra cash for the house deposit. Grrrr! Ok I'm done venting for now.
The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday which is the equivalent to our January sales. Apparently two people even died in the Black Friday stampede. I was up and at Penneys at 4am in the morning when they opened expecting a major crowd but there was no stampede. I did Black Friday in style five stores in four hours (I had to stop when I ran out of room in the car) I got almost everything I needed toaster, cookware, sheets, quilt, iron, pillows, cutlery and the list goes on. Between the employee discount and sale prices I saved over $600.
I finally moved into the apartment
on December 6th and I love it. It has a state of the art gym and totally puts the one at the MFS to shame. Every piece of cardio equipment has a flat screen tv attached with cable. I can actually watch movies or my two favourite country music stations while working out totally cool. My apartment looks like a hotel room because they have a place called opryland warehouse where you can buy second hand hotel furniture from the opryland or marriott hotels. Great prices and everyting is still in good condition they just sell everything off when they do an upgrade. So I hired a truck and bought all the basics from there.
Yesterday I did one of my first early starts at Penneys and had to deal with peak hour traffic for the first time. There were two car wrecks on 65 thankfully I didn't get on the interstae so I was only an hour late to work. It took me 1 hour 45 mintues to get there when it should have taken 15 minutes. As if that wasn't bad enough it started snowing at 5pm which was fun because I'd never seen snow before but
then I had to get in the car and drive home at 6pm. I got home well after 8pm and again it should have taken me 15 minutes.....This town is hopeless at driving in bad weather. To top it off I had another early start this morning. When I woke up and saw all the snow outside I was dreading dealing with the traffic. But figured I'd brave it! I walked outside almost went arse over turkey because the snow had turned to ice and was really slippery. the car door was iced shut and took me forever to open and then I realsied that it wasn't just dew on the car windows it was ice. So I rang work and told them I wasn't dealing with this crap and that I was going back to bed and someone wake me up when summer gets here. Whoever told me I didn't need a garage in this city is a complete lunatic or clearly from the northern states and used to this crap! I have since been informed that as far as snow/ice goes this is about as bad as it gets in Nashville and that will probably be the first and last snow of the winter.
Music Music Music!!! I went to Lewisburg a few weeks ago for a gig at Mommas country club and dance hall where I line-danced all night. That was a lot of fun. Went to Memphis for a show last Friday night that was a little crazy cos I moved into the apartment the following day and then had to work until 1am Sunday morning. I was a little exhuasted after all of that but it was fun. Other than that it's been a little quiet since thanksgiving apparently December and January are the quietest months for music I guess since everyone is from out of town a lot of people head home for the holidays.
