Some books and maps refer to this town as Jonesboro while others spell the name of the town Jonesborogh. Regardless it is a neat little town in far eastern Tennessee. It is the oldest town in Tennessee and was actually founded in 1779 seventeen years before Tennessee became a state. The current population is around 4000. The town relies heavily upon visitors as one of its primary incomes.According to a plaque in the town, the town that attempted to become a separate state in 1784 and was to have been named the State of Franklin. Unfortunately Congress never recognized the new state. Preservation has been key as will be noted throughout the town.
