Yesterday was all corn fields as we crossed Michigan, touching Indiana, and across the north of Illinois. Night stop was at Flint just inside Iowa. This morning we set off for South Dakota. It is all flat or undulating country with long straight roads. At one stage we encountered a dirt road for a few miles but this was no obstacle for the Jag. After a bit of scenic appreciation, we put the GPS back on 'fastest' rather than 'shortest'. This evening we are in Mitchell, S. Dakota, good meal and lodgings and squeezed in a visit to the Worlds Largest Corn Palace. Pics to follow. Pam and George ... read more

Day 2 started with the crapper full and we have a lovely picture of Jeff clearing out the problem. After several minutes reading the manual to make sure it would work in the right direction, everything cleared out. We drove from Iowa to South Dakota and I'm not sure what everyone is talking about when they say there is a shortage of corn. South Dakota is just like they said - hot, dry, windy, and flat. We are staying on the Missouri River (kind of) here at Al's Oasis. Mitch said he liked where we stayed last night better. I'm sure it will be an early morning and we will get the heck out of dodge. On to Crazy Woman Campground, Wyoming tomorrow. Love, The Wolvertons... read more

Well it's been a long time coming, but at last I'm on the road! I left Wisconsin a couple of days ago, and for those of you I haven't been in close contact with, here's a brief recap. I spent the summer at my mom's place; what was planned to be a bit of fixing up turned into a total disposal of mom's home. She was diagnosed with colon cancer, and has subsequently undergone treatment. Coupled with all of her other health issues, she needed to be placed in a nursing home, and my brother(at 42) into his very first apartment. It was a bit of a process, but everyone is now settled in. I am taking a very easy trip across the prairies, stopping to see all the things I used to fly by on ... read more

I sit down and try to come up with the words to describe the last days, and my mind is blank. 3500 miles in however many days, stops for conspicuously marked tourist attractions, and a family visit. All is well in our little tin van at the moment, and even better after a restful nights sleep in the best western of Chamberlain, South Dakota. Today is the day to hit the Corn palace, the place that Jule and Anita are very excited about that. All I have to say is, they should develop more hobbies other than pasting corn on the side of a building. It is quite desolate here, and I am glad to say that my home is not situated in the Midwest, as I am not sure that I could face the bleak ... read more

Chicago to South Dakota Even though it has only been 2 days since we’ve written, a whole lot has happened. Right now we’re driving from Mitchell, South Dakota and headed for Murdo, where we’re going to spend the night. I am very excited to see what kind of sunset we will have on the completely flat horizon. On Monday morning, in Chicago, we woke up and gathered our carload that we had taken from the car and headed over to that sketchy valet that we talked about before, which didn’t end up being too bad. We paid them and got into the car and looked for Millennium Park. The GPS didn’t like the tall buildings and basically did nothing for us while we were in the city. We did find our way there though and we ... read more

First stress free day of Visionquest2007 and we lived it up like relative kings (and queens). Set sail from Des Moines a little after 1:00 and enjoyed a nice drive along the Missouri River. Ended our drive in Mitchell, SD, home of the world famous Corn Palace. We've been through a lot with the car and haven't slept on a bed in over a week so we decided to splurge on a decent hotel room. We grabbed some Chinese takeout from "Twin Dragon" and headed to our clean hotel room for dinner, relaxation and of course blogging. Tomorrow morning it's the Corn Palace followed by an early afternoon arrival in Badlands National Park. ... read more
