Yesterday we left Palm Key at 8 a.m. so sorry to leave such a beautiful place and we drove to Santee State Park where we took a morning Fisheagle pontoon tour boat of the swamps and Lake Marion. We saw ospreys feeding their young in huge nests, egrets, herons, alligators, hyacinth, water lillies, Jesus birds (they walk on water), snake birds, and other fascinating things like a dead alligator rotting on the banks of the swamp. (talk about stench from a 14 foot dead alligator in that heat)!!

We met Polly, Russ, and Weston at our cabin in the afternoon and we all went out to a wonderful authentic VERY Southern dinner at Lone Star BBQ ust outside the park. Here BBQ is a noun not a verb! We had grits and tomato pie, hush puppies, ribs, chicken, bread pudding, collard greens, hash...

Today, we drove to Columbia, the capitol of SC and we enjoyed the EdVenture Children's Museum, and the South Carolina State Museum. Afterwards we checked into the Inn at USC (no not Univ. of S. Cal and not Univ. of Spoiled Children---but Univ. of South Carolina). It is run by the University as a training model for college students who are learning hospitality and hotel studies. It's a very nice hotel but they are not allowed to advertise so they depend on travel writers like me.

We went to another local BBQ tonight with our host called Little Pig's BBQ.

P.S. (part 2)
I never got to post this blog last night so now I'll combine today in Columbia ( 6/ 28) with this entry (above) from last night....today we went to the Zoo and then to the museum of art in Columbia. The highlight was a wonderful pontoon boat trip out of Lake Murray where thousands of purple martin birds congregate every night on "Bomb Island." It was spectacular to see! We have really enjoyed this Inn at USC where we are staying---the service is great and the breakfast is the best in a hotel of this kind! They even give you champagne at check in and the young college boys who work here are all cuties and call me sweetie. 😉
