Geo: 41.8742, -79.1523On Day 2, we left Chambersburg and headed northwest 200 miles to the Allegheny National Forest. It was overcast with periods of light rain most of the way. But, it was a beautiful drive through the back roads in the mountains. We got to Chapman State Park around 3:30pm and the skies cleared up for the evening. We biked a trail along the lake and then relaxed for the evening.... read more

It's down to less than 3 weeks 'til we leave, and I'm beginning to get anxious. Not nervous, just excited and ready to go. Everything seems to be falling in line: I have my passport, visa, certificate of eligibility, insurance info, and flight confirmed. The latter I did today and tried to get Zach and I seats together. No problem on the Baltimore-Detroit flight, but Detroit-Osaka was difficult. We may have to try again when we get to the airport. Ah well. My mom bought me a DigiCam, and my Grandma bought me this cool travel satchel thing that will hold my important documents and stuff. And it's bright pink, which makes me happy. I need to start packing, though. I wonder how much I need to take... do I need bedding? Hmm. Well, I'm going ... read more

This week I mailed all my information/application stuff to the Japanese Consulate in New York so they can send me back my visa. It was pretty scary placing what is essentially my entire life at the moment (passport, certificate of eligibility) into an envelope and giving it to complete strangers. I just realized that three years ago at this time I was just arriving home from Ireland. I guess I'm feeling a little "homesick," because I really wish I was there right now. Maybe it's because we've had absolutely no rain, and the grass is all dead, and the sky is that hazy color that it gets ... read more

As you can probably tell, I'm not in Japan yet. But things are starting to fall into place, so I thought this would be a good time to start. I got my certificate of eligibility from Osaka, so I can mail everything to the Japanese Consulate and get my visa. I also have a housing form to fill out so that Kansai Gaidai knows where to put me. I got a new scholarship from the Warren Foundation, so the money is also finally working out. It was touch and go for a while, believe me! I talked to Zach's (ZachInJapan) mom today. He's still in Mongolia, doing well, and he'll be back in the states on the 30th of July. His mom is such a sweetheart! She told me I can stay with them for a ... read more
