Commercialism

From February to March there are two national holidays that are extrememly popular in our culture, Valentines Day and St. Patricks Day. I see these two holidays as extremely commercial and that the true point of them doesn't even get across even more so than Christmas. I think that Valentines Day was actually a holiday completely made up my salesmen/businesses as an excuse to sell cards/flowers/candy to people; a quick and easy way to make a lot of money for a single day and it is an easy pitch because any person in some sort of a relationship definitely have to purchase at least one item for their significant other on this day. I don't even know the actual story behind Valentines Day if there is even one.
St. Patricks Day, which is a very popular holiday at Villanova, along with many other schools im sure is all about one thing, beer. I have nothing against this at all, but unlike Valentines Day I know that the reason there is St. Patricks Day is to celebrate his Christian missionary work in Ireland. However this message has been lost among Guiness, Leprechauns, Shamrocks and green. It is one thing to have a good time and celebrate this holiday but at least have some sort of knowledge or appreciation for the day before you starts to funnel at 10 o clock in the morning.
I think that corporations play a major role in instilling this mind frame into the public by promoting all their products which include greeting cards, chocolate hearts, beer commericals, parades and so forth. Would they even be popular if it wasnt for the business aspect for them? I dont really think so.
