The Trailhead at Franklin is actually the same trailhead is the
Samuel Justus recreational trail that goes north to Oil City
An excellent and very scenic trail. Should be called a “rail and
RIVER trail” as it hugs the Allegheny River.
The Allegheny River Trail is part of the
Erie to Pittsburgh Trail and mileage makers show the distance between the two. There are additional mileage markers every half mile showing distance from Franklin.
This
trail is very scenic with the river on the west and deciduous forest on the east. The river is within view all the time.
There are
two tunnels. The 1 km ( 3350 foot) Kennerdell tunnel 15 miles south of Franklin and the Rockland tunnel 34 km ( 21 miles) south at 900 metres ( 2868 feet). The tunnels are paved but not lighted. There are reflectors but a
flashlight is recommended.
There are many benches facing the river along the trail. Eight km south of Franklin, there is a side trail to the
Sandy Creek Trail (see separate blog entry)
At the 12 mile marker from Franklin, the trail turns inland and unfortunately the trail is not paved but has large sharp limestone as a base. You need a bike with very thick tires to ride over these stones.
