6/21/05 Megan and I started running today. I surprised myself at how much I was able to run without getting out of breath. Then I finished with crunches and sit-ups and remembered how out of shape I actually am. Oh well, it’s a start. Today went better with the kids and I actually started having some fun with the teaching. I realized the enjoyment comes once we start making the rehearsal process our own- incorporating ourselves into the directing rather than going strictly by the book. The week will continue to get better in that respect as we get more comfortable with the show and blocking and ourselves. Corry is an interesting city. I’m not exactly sure what to make of it. Megan describes PA as a southern state masquerading as a northeastern state. I think ... read more

Location: Corry PAs Day one of the new week. We made a few mistakes, as prophesized. Including-but not limited to: Forgetting to cast a young Mowgli, forgetting to take down the names of our leads, forgetting to change Friday’s rehearsal time in the parent letter. But then you try and audition 61 kids, with one other person, on your second week out, for a show that you have week to put on and just see if you don’t forget a few things. All in all for our first week out by ourselves (last week we had a trainer who saved our lives) it went pretty well. We are currently n Corry, PA- a town on the smaller side (pop: ~6,000) about 30ish miles from Erie. It is a pre-registered event, so only 60 (well 61) kids ... read more

Location: Jasper, IN So many thoughts, So many feelings, so little time and words to express them with. Today went incredible- the 2 shows went very smooth- a few kids forgetting lines, but others very quickly picking up cues. I worked backstage, and Megan played Baloo. Afterwards, as I was taking down the set with a couple parents and I didn’t get a chance to say “Goodbye” to a lot of the kids (or rather most of the kids). I keep thinking back to the last things I said to them (probably something like “Shhhhhhhhh…. Keep your legs crossed”) and wishing it had been something more encouraging. But I have to remember that these kids will be remembering this whole past week, not just my last words. And as Megan put it, who was feeling the ... read more

Location: Jasper, Indiana Staying in paradise. Lake house, with a pool, canoe, small motorized boat. Slightly tipsy on a ½ bottle of white whine, which our home stay has generously shared, and it has definitely gone to my head. Point of wisdom #1, from our host Anne: “Never take the top plate, it’s the dust collector.” Megan and I comment on how we have to keep reminding ourselves we’re adults. We still feel like kids. We are having trouble not seeing ourselves as peers with the kids we teach. Anne replies that she feels the same way. She’s reaching 60 this year with full grown kids and grandchildren. “No matter what, we are always ourselves, people just me as older than I really am.” Kid at heart. Forever. I am so happy right now. That’s the ... read more

Location: “Budget Motel”- Wenzville, Missouri Day three of being on the road traveling to Jasper, Indiana. So many thoughts in my head. I'm not sure how to weave them together so they make any sense. Perhaps I'll just start with today and work backwards, and put down all the revelations as I remember them. How can a minute last a lifetime, And a day forever, But two weeks pass in a blink of an eye? Any concepts I held in my head of the relationship between time and distance have been thrown for a loop. Three days ago we left Montana- across the Country Currently we are near the borders of Missouri and Illinois. 40 miles west of St. Luis In a “Budget Inn- run by an Indian man, his wife and two children A boy ... read more
