Seal Rock
Not so sunny but a lovely trip Mum and Dad visited me for three weeks. We had a great time. They arrived on the Saturday whilst I was in Colorado on Fulbright Fall Meeting. When I returned on the Tuesday, they were still really very jet lagged. By the next weekend they were starting to aclimatize and we travelled to the coast. We visited Florence, Newport and Yachats. The weather was freezing, and typically breezy, but we had a great time. We visited the aquarium, the sea lion caves (although they were out...twice..so we didn't pay 9 bucks to see the caves minus the animals) and we had a lovely walk along the beach at Seal Rock and saw some seals at no cost at all.
Wednesday the 10th October arrived and I turned the BIG 3-0! A bit of a depressing thought, but mum and dad made it a memorable birthday; they thought of everything! I got balloons and many wonderful gifts placed on the stairs;a kind of tradition. Mum gave me a birthday cake ( from the bakery yum) and a pavlova to take to school, the staff loved the new dessert! I spoke to Gran and Maimie early in the morning before I went
to work and the children sang "Happy Birthday" to me American Style! When I got back from school we went out for dinner at Cafe Soriah, it was a lovely meal, and I think Dad particularly enjoyed his duck.
The following weekend we travelled again to Bend. We stayed in a wonderful wee cabin just outside the city. The car journey there was a bit arduous; it was pitch black across the mountains and we didn't know the route. Dad found it difficult to see the road with the oncoming headlights and trucks towering over us. Eventually, with the aid of my mini torch and the directions, we reached the cabin and luckily, we were close enough to town to go out again for dinner. We had a nice Italian meal at Caruso's. On the Friday we went into sunny Bend and wandered round the town. Whilst we were in the tourist info office a museum caught my eye. I suggested we vist The High Desert Museum as it advertised Mustangs (for me) and otters (for mum). Therefore, we headed to the museum. We were there for most of the day, and it was very interesting and extensive. We
Florence
Nice shops all enjoyed it. We ate at a lovely restaurant in Bend called the Bluefish and returned to the cabin to light the wood burning stove ( a definite highlight!!).
On Saturday after much deliberations we decided not to travel to Crater Lake but instead return on the same route and vist Sisters. I was glad we did as it was a nice town and mum enjoyed strolling around Saturday market and I bought a Cowboy hat...yee ha. The weather in this area is typically clear and sunny. The views of the Sisters mountain range were stunning! (I am trying not to say awesome as I hear the word sooooo much!) Dad got some pictures from the viewpoint.
On route home to Eugene we stopped at Sahalie Falls the weather was beautiful and so were the falls. We stopped at another point on the McKenzie where I had previously rafted. The scenery is amazing around this location. Unfortunatley Dad's ankle prevented him from really exploring. However; on the Sunday as the sun continued to shine in Eugene I took Mum and Dad up Mount Pisgah. It was quite an experience as the views from the top and on the
top were something else!! At the top we saw people ( nothing strange with that), dogs (equally nothing strange), horses (getting slightly more unusual) and goats! Yes goats that were being lead up and down the hill in a kind of entourage, apparently they were in trainning!
Speaking of trainning in desperation I have signed up for personal training sessions at the gym to try and improve my lack of fitness. My body is lacking fitness as for two months now I have not been enjoying my usual horsey work out; through both riding and all the associated manual work. I have been riding but not too the same extent and I have taken up tennis again, but alas when I had my introduction to the gym I realised that I was not in shape. Although apparently my lack of flexibilty could be genetic ( ha ha).
Work is good, but as the rain has been continuous over the past few weeks and the summer seems to have all but gone I can't help looking forward to the sunny Florida skies I will be seeing in December and a longer holiday!!
