10 days until we depart! We've left the great city of Seattle and we're currently spending time with family in El Reno, Norman, and Coweta, Oklahoma. We're breaking in our traveling shoes and resisting the urge to over pack because we know we can get what we need in Vietnam and for far cheaper too! We've gotten some great advice from a family friend who lived in Saigon until she was 19 and just returned from a trip in January of 2011. We hope to update this blog at least once a week but perhaps if we stay close to city centers even more often. We'll see if my Vietnamese language class I took in Seattle will pay off. We're so excited to begin this journey, thank you for sharing it with us!... read more

When I first arrive I walked into a store to buy a coffee (not a real coffee. They don't have such a thing!) and looked behind the counter where the cigarettes were diplayed. Next to the cigarettes are all these tins about the size of shoe polish. I thought to myself, "That's a funny place to display nugget". They must be very keen on clean polished shoes. Well not so. But everyones shoes are really dirty. A few days later after the blur of flying for 28 hours had worn off and everything wasn't so fuzzy I noticed these locals with tins in their back pocket of their jeans. But for some reason they kept turning away and spitting on the ground. Their lower lip seems to bulge out like the shrimp fisherman on "Forrest Gump" ... read more

I'm back!!! Woke this morning at 5:30am to the sound of a thunder. Compared to last week the lightening was unimpressive. Now it is pouring down so no work today. Over the last 3 days I have done about 43 hours. When the trucks start rolling you stay in it until the end of the day or whenever we get called in. So I take food and water to last the day. There are about 20 other kiwis here with me. We range in age from 23 to 71. Mollie is a part of the team She is here with her husband, Roger. They are in their late 60's and she is a great driver. These people come from all walks of life and have been fantastic as I get used to driving etc. I tell ... read more

From when I arrived in the United States I have been continually blown away at how many really big people there are. Luckily I haven't had to sit next to any of them on a plane. Honestly they are huge. Everywhere I look when I'm eating at a restaurant or looking at the people in their cars I see people who have a hard time even walking. Seeing them in a restaurant puts me off eating most of the menu and definitely not keen on eating desert. The people in this country are eating themselves to death. More people are overweight than thin. The tragedy is that the kids are also in the same situation. No I don't think I will take photos of this or maybe I will. Hmmmm The size of the cars ... read more
