Clouds
We saw lots and lots of clouds today. As befits the first major driving day of our trip, we drove 650 miles. Most people we talk to think that's crazy. For us, it's almost short. We had mostly good weather, little to no traffic and decent roads. We were thinking we would only be able to average 55 or so, but we easily made 60. Why, then, were we on the road 14 1/2 hours? Well . . .
We spent almost two hours in Minot. Our local bank didn't have any Canadian cash, so we were directed to the downtown one here. We found a parking place just outside the construction zone and then walked in. There was a line and complications, so that took a while. We also needed supplies, so we drove to a K-Mart. I wanted to find a specific cache in Minot, so we disconnected the Jeep (at much effort), drove there, found it and drove back. We had windshield wiper difficulties, hook-up difficulties and I forget what else, but it was a long time. We're glad it didn't involve a service visit an hour up the road (see North to Alaska: A Problem), but really would have preferred to not have spent
Minot Depot
This was the starting point for the cache I wanted to find. so much time.
The second delay was at customs. The first guy we talked to was grumpy, which wasn't that big a deal. (What do you mean, you don't care after we get to Alaska?) We had to visit with the immigration people, though, which took nearly half an hour. The only good thing is that we finally have stamps in our passports.
As I said, the rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. We got in late, but not late enough that we couldn't finally finish putting things away in the camper.
