Hey travel blog readers... Greetings from Bismarck, ND where we are finally starting to have summer. The motorcycles are out in number. Someone asked me if we are having a rally in the area...I said, "No, it's just summer!" It's been almost one year ago that I left on my Alaskan Adventure and a lot has happened since then. I will try and catch everyone up so that I can get everyone current on my travels and where I am headed this summer. The Alaskan trip was the ride of a "lifetime" however; it opened up new areas of riding style for me. If you recall, I rode the Alaskan Highway on my 2005 Goldwing. It was a great bike but alas, I watched all the enduro bikes passing me and told myself, "I have to ... read more

Day 23 (July 20, 2008) Sunday Good morning, I have been hesitating to make an entry on my last day as I guess I am in denial that my adventure is over. I started out early from Lewiston, MT (stayed at the famous Yogo Inn which is named after the famous Yogo Sapphire mined exclusively in Central Montana and the only American gem found in the crown jewels of England) and covered the 450 miles home in record time with 75+ mph on Montana roads. The closer I got to Bismarck the more bugs my windshield picked up. Amazing. Now that my Alaska adventure is over, I have lots of memories, photos and video to share with my family and friends. Why did I do the Alaska ride...it has been a goal of mine for quite ... read more

What a haul. We left at 6:30 AM Mountain time and pulled in at 10 PM Central Time. Stopped in Livingston, Montana... a rest stop in Montana and for dinner in Glendive, Montana. The theme... we were in Montana the whole day! Towards the end of the trip (the last 100 miles or so) we got to follow a storm and then go through it. Hopefully it washed off all of the bugs! We also saw a rainbow from end to end.... read more

Good morning everyone. You are about to take part in a 6,000 mile journey which also starts with my first turn of the tires. But before I get started I've asked my wife JoLynn, to make an entry on her thoughts about my trip. JOLYNN: Well, Rob can finally get started on his long awaited Alaskan adventure. He has been planning, organizing, and planning some more for all the details for months now. I remember about a month ago when I came home to a tent and sleeping bag set up in our family room. Now that is camping in comfort (HA)!! Our cat was not sure what to think of that. I enjoy riding with Rob on short trips but a month on the back of the Goldwing and sleeping in a tent for a ... read more

I'm fortunate enough to have friends who own a pontoon so spent the weekend on the Missouri River. The River is home to plenty of sand bars and a very scary current at times. It is not to be messed with. However, it is gorgeous as well and very cooling on warm days. It's also great for my tan :) Here are a few pictures... I also threw in a State Capitol photo.... read more

Wow...in just a few short days there are over 60 subscribers to my travel blog...I hope you will not be dissapointed in my journal entries. Please feel free to make comments that I will publish as I go along...my good friend Chuck Scott has an awesome comment...thanks Chuck for your humorous wisdom on my decision to go to Alaska. Also, pass my blog along to anyone you might think would be interested. Not much photos now, but just wait...... People have asked my why am I driving my motorcycle to Alaska via the Alaska Highway? While I think I know the answer, I will give you a more definitve answer when I return on July 26. What were my immediate questions as I started the preperation.... I wanted to know what are the road conditions? When ... read more

One of the best resources that I came across planning the drive north to Alaska was a magazine called THE MILEPOST. The 2008 edition just came out at a cost at Barnes and Noble for around $28.00 The MILEPOST provides a mile-by-mile description of all major highways and roads in Alaska and northwestern Canada. It includes detailed information on all major destinations (cities, communities, national parks, attractions, etc) and how-to-help for various modes of transportation (air, ferry, railroads, etc). One of the backbones of THE MILEPOST are the highway logs. In these mile-by-mile descriptions of the highways and byways of the North, you will find campgrounds, food, lodging, gas and other services, attractions, fishing spots, road conditions, geography, history and much more. It will be in my luggage when I make the trip North to Alaska. ... read more

Today is a great day in Bismarck, ND. Sunny today with highs in the high 70s. I have been asked what is my projected route of travel to Anchorage, AK. I put a lot of thought into that route and here is what I have come up with. You will notice that the miles between stops is not that far. This will allow me to spend time at selected cities and enjoy the scenery and people. I will be camping the majority of the trip which will allow me to vary my stops. It seems there will always be room along the way to pitch a tent at an established campground. Here's the dates, itinerary locations, highways traveled and total scheduled miles for that day. As I mentioned, this is the scheduled dates and locations...it's my ... read more

Well, it's Friday May 30 and my last day in the ND National Guard even though I don't offically retire until Aug 30, 2008. ( I have over 70 days of leave to use.) Nevertheless, it has been a "great ride" in serving my country and meeting some great people in my travels around the world. Now, I'll take some time for myself and my family which is the reason for this travel blog...to record my motorcycle Alaskan Adventure. It's taken me this past year to plan for my Alaskan trip. The research has taken me to many websites regarding travel through Canada and Alaska. One question I've asked other bikers who have ridden to Alaska...what would you do if you had to do it all over again? And the answer I keep hearing is "I ... read more

Spring had arrived but we got a dusting of snow. Was gone by the end of the day when it warmed up but was so pretty in the morning when I awoke. Went out to see my city and take some photos. Headed down to my favorite area...down by the Missouri River. The photos are all shot in color. It was just so black and white with the fresh snow and crisp morning that they look black and white (except of course the ones of the evergreen needles). Very pretty morning but I'm ready for Spring!... read more
