A hike to the Oak Island Pier. Spent some time out on the fisherman's pier. Watched the people trying to catch the fish and heard the story of a shark sighting from one of the fishermen. Did some shopping in town and then back to the house for a relaxing afternoon. Later in the day we had a day at the beach. Our rental house is fully equipped. Beach chairs. Boogie boards. Umbrellas. Spent the afternoon enjoying our time...until Lori saw the shark. No one else believed it, so the rest stayed in the ocean. Headed to the coast for some beach time. Landed at Oak Island. No digging for treasure. Our rental is a really nice place on the beach. Weather is beautiful. We had safe travels from Statesville to Oak Island. Pete loves driving the Chrysler 300. We have a nice view of the ocean from our deck.... read more

DAY 22: MAY 13, 2013 After a drive of 293.5 miles I have come slap up against the Atlantic Ocean at a high priced little motel called the Ocean Crest on Oak Island, NC. I had a nice dinner at the seafood joint next door and am sitting around watching the sun go down out of the open motel room door. It is kind of bass-ackwards from what I am accustomed to seeing on the Pacific coast at sunset. This is more like a sunrise. Oak Island is just south of the estuary of the Cape Fear River. Locals hereabouts claim that the pirate Blackbeard went down in a blaze of glory a short distance above the little town of Southport. We left Edisto on Sept 8th about 11:30 am. Linda, David and Dee Dee escorted us out the creek. It was a great stay in Edisto and we plan to stop mid October on our return trip south. We went off shore overnight. The first part of the trip was great, good winds and only 2 ft seas. During the night the winds and seas picked up. It got a little rough out there. The auto steering bracket bolts broke so we duck taped it for the night. Due to the higher winds and confused seas we motored from about 2am. We arrived in Georgetown about 8:30 am and tied up to the public docks. Later we pulled across from the public docks and anchored for two nights. We had about 6 items to repair or ... read more
