Frisco Campground, Buxton, North Carolina Although the weather was near-perfect, we took a much needed down day. Did even less than what we normally do on a down-day, just slept in. I have to admit that we are getting tired. Still have a little more than two weeks to go on this trip, but exhaustion is setting in. But the weather was perfect for napping too - not hot at all and with a cool breeze coming in off the ocean. The exhaustion factor is something we are starting to talk about. How can we see what we want to see but reduce the toll it takes. We have to acknowledge that we can't seem to keep the pace that we did at the start of the trip. Maybe as trips get closer to the end, ... read more

Frisco Campground, Frisco, North Carolina How do you travel 150 miles while only driving about 40? The answer is 'by Ferry'. Originally I had planned to drive about 200 miles north and then east to our destination on the Outer Banks. I assumed, without looking into it, that ferry trips with the trailer were either not available, or were prohibitively expensive. Turns out, that just isn't true. Although we had to pay $15 extra for the trailer, the entire ferry ride between Cedar Island and Ocracoke was just $30. I would have paid that much in gasoline with the drive I had planned. And the ferry between Ocracoke and Hatteras, at the other end of the island was free. So we moved several islands up the Outer Banks chain, but I only put about 40 miles ... read more

And so begins stage three of our adventure. Destination Hatteras Island at the southern end of the North Carolina Outer Banks, known locally at the Outers or the OBX. Prior to organising this trip I had no knowledge that this area existed. For those of you like me, it's a collection of small islands connected by one long road and a series of bridges. I've never been down to the Florida Keys but I would imagine that there are comparisons which could be drawn. Our journey was slow, mostly due to stringent speed limits and to an expressway which was anything but. A 55 mph limit and a set of traffic lights do not equal express in my vocabulary! It was, of course, beautiful to see the shift in scenery from the lush green woods of ... read more

One Week in the Outer Banks, NC October 1st - 9th Lee and I had planned to go to the Outer Banks with a group of friends the first week of October. Being that it was three weeks after our wedding we joked that it was our temporary honeymoon. And boy was it the best temporary honeymoon ever! The Outer Banks can be quite an expensive place to vacation. On the other hand, if you play it right and rent off season and go with a large group of people to split the cost of the rental it can be quite affordable. This is exactly what we had planned. We searched for a house with 7 bedrooms, a pool, hot tub, and of course requested that the house be beachfront. At peak season the highest cost ... read more

Outer Banks, NC - Day 2 The wind had died down considerably over night and sunshine was bright and plentiful. The 3 of us headed to the beach and after living on the left coast for over 45 years was surprised by the smaller wave size and the Atlantic's lack of intensity. However this probably made the beaches endless in both directions. The sand was very fine and easy to walk on. I took a few photos and then we were off on a new adventure. The destination was Ocracoke Island, yes an island only reachable from Hatteras by ferry which shockingly was free. The drive down Hatteras was a series of small towns separated by large chunks of National Seashore. Each town was different than the last and the further south we went the more ... read more
