We left our hotel in Lee, Mass. on Friday morning. We had about 150 miles to travel and took secondary roads to catch some color before we hit New York City. We found a covered bridge and a state park with a waterfall to stop at. It was a beautiful day, a few clouds but mostly sunny and kind of warm.
As we approached New York City, we decided to stop in Union City, NJ. to top off the fuel tank and get some lunch. Well, somehow I missed the turnoff and the next thing you know we are crossing the George Washington Bridge onto Manhattan Island. Luckily we still had our trusty GPS Tom. He got us to a gas station in Manhattan and to our hotel. We arrived about 15 minutes before we were supposed to check in. On trip advisor, some people complained that they were treated badly when they tried to check in early. We had no such problem. We unloaded the car and programed in the rental return address and got rid of the car. We walked back to our hotel to unpack. We took an evening walk around for a while to
find some dinner and get ourselves orientated.
The next morning we got up and headed out for a day of walking. We went to the New York City Public Library for a look see. It was way nicer than anything we have in Sacramento. A security guard pointed out to us an original copy of the Guttenberg Bible printed in 1450.
We left the library and headed over to Rockefeller Center. We passed where they film the NBC nightly news. We saw the skating rink and took the elevator to the top of the building. It was a little hazy that day, but we still had some nice views. We then walked over to St. Patrick's Cathedral. Too bad it is being restored. The entire outside and almost all of the inside had scaffolding and netting to cover it.
We next walked over to the Grand Central Terminal and did a self guided tour. Did you know that over 700,000 people pass through there every day? That's a lot of people.
Lastly we headed over to Times Square for a look around. It was wall to wall people. What a zoo! We finally headed back to our room for
a rest. That was a 7 1/2 mile day.
This morning we got up and headed out for the World Trade Center Memorial. It was a beautiful, sunny day around 65 degrees. It looked so nice out that we went up to the top of the Empire State Building first to look around. After that we went over to Penn Station and got the subway down to the WTC. We toured the 9-11 memorial. Very somber. Its hard to imagine what actually happened there.
After that we went to the financial district to find the Wall Street bull. There was a line of people waiting to get their picture with the bull. We got in line behind an Asian family. They must have taken at least 50 pictures of themselves while us and the line got longer and longer. Finally someone said that they were through and we got in for our 2 seconds.
While we were in Southern Manhattan and it was still sunny out we decided to take the Staten Island Ferry over to Staten Island and back again. It goes by the Statue of Liberty and we got some good pics.
Tomorrow we visit the United
Nations building for a tour.

Hi Bob and Stacy, Glad things are open now for you to tour. The government finally came through. Looks like you are getting your exercise as well. I enjoy reading your blogs.
