We flew from Kansas City to La Guardia airport in New York. The flight was only two hours and fifteen minutes. We took an UBERr to our hotel in Manhattan near the theatre district. Our plan is theatre and art. We bought tickets for three shows from home and hope to buy tickets to more show as at the half price ticket booth. We arrive on Saturday afternoon and have tickets to see Dear Evan Hanson Saturday night. We have a great Italian meal at a restaurant a few doors from our hotel before the show. We loved the show. We have seen the movie so we know what to expect. The cast was great. We had great seats. The woman who sat next to me and the woman behind me were sobbing at the sad ... read more

30th August, 2022 Got up around 8am, showered and packed the last minute stuff into our suitcases. We still had a bit of alcohol left but couldn’t take it with us and neither could the boys so we donated it to the cleaning staff who were very appreciative. The doorman downstairs organised a taxi for us to go to JFK airport. Another harrowing experience. I swear New York drivers have a death wish. We had plenty of time to get some lunch before our 2pm flight so we had a drink and something to eat in the sports bar and watched some of the tennis. At 1.15pm we were called to board and we were given the exit row seats which meant extra leg room. Yay! We reversed out right on time. Then everything went to ... read more

29th August, 2022 Up early to get ready for the tennis. We ubered out to Flushing Meadows which was a whole experience in itself. The driver was an expert in cutting off trucks and buses to push in the non-moving traffic. It was heart attack material. We got to see Andy Murray win his match, watched Simona Halep get beaten by a qualifier and Madison Keys win her match. It was a long hot day again and we mostly managed to stay out of the sun. We got around to a couple of outside courts and to the practice courts but the crowds were over the top and you couldn’t really see much. Got the subway back to the hotel which is what we should have done this morning but we were told it was a ... read more

26th August, 2022 There was a couple of sore heads this morning including mine. We had a bit of a late start and got the subway down to Brooklyn. We went to a little bakery that Zack knows about and got some lunch and were going to walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge but a storm started and the rain was pelting down so we couldn’t. We got the subway back and stopped at Little Island. Again, we couldn’t go in because of the storm and lightning so we ended up getting an Uber back to the hotel for a nanna nap. I still wasn’t feeling 100%. Dinner was at a rooftop restaurant at Bryant Park where there was a free concert happening. We listened to Spanish, African and Indian music while we ate. Zack’s friend ... read more

27th August, 2022 Christopher, Sandra and I walked down to the United Nations building but forgot that it was the weekend so it was closed. They take the flags down when they are closed but that didn‘t give us the hint. Anyway it was a nice little walk while we were waiting for everyone else to get ready. Brunch was at a beautiful place called Le Gratin in Beekman Street. Amazing food. After that, we walked to Battery Park and got the ferry over to Governor Island. What a great place. It had once been a military training island and also a prison. It had been abandoned for a while but is now being slowly rejuvenated. There is a day spa and a couple of places to stay including a glamping site. The old officers houses ... read more

28th August, 2022 Left the hotel about 10am to go get tickets for the boys to see a show. I introduced them to the guy I had bought the tickets from the other day and they got a good deal. We then walked all the way up 7th Ave to The Plaza for brunch only to find out they are closed. Zack lost a few brownie points there. We ended up at The Boathouse in Central Park. It was extremely busy but worth the walk and wait. Mimosas were flowing as usual. We then went to Bloomingdale’s for the boys to spend money while Sandra and I waited in the Cafe. We can‘t afford Bloomingdale’s. Back to the room so us girls could pack our suitcases for our trip home while the boys went to the ... read more

25th August, 2022 Got up approx. 9am and decided it was washing day. We found a coin laundry about 10 blocks away and as it was shade all the way, we walked there. The machines were well maintained and we got all our stuff washed for around $10.00 US, which wasn‘t too bad. It was a hot morning, so on our way back, we found a bar called Jackson Hole and stopped in for a refreshing margarita. We walked back to the hotel and sorted out suitcases before the boys (friends of Jackie’s) arrived. We went out at about 3pm to buy some drinks for when they arrived and when we got back they were there. It was so good to see them all. Sandra gets on well with all. Dinner was Italian and then we ... read more

23rd August, 2022 We went to the cafe next door for breakfast this morning. It was much better than the hotel breakfast. Sandra had pancakes and I had French Toast. We walked up to the M&M store to get on the hop on hop off bus by 9:30am. The weather was much better today so we didn‘t need our coats even though we brought them. We got off at Ground Zero and walked around both pools but the museum isn‘t open on Tuesdays so we couldn’t go in. Jumped on a subway train to go to the Staten Island Ferry. Walked around in circles again looking for a ticket booth and then realised it was free. Got quite a few good pics of the Statue of Liberty and also some skyline shots. Got on the bus ... read more

The US Tennis Open starts today. It is a great event, though not quite as majestic as Wimbledon. Watching on TV, I see familiar faces, including Brad Gilbert, who I saw as a snotty little kid in Oakland back in the 70s. People change, the world changes. What can I say?Enjoy the Open. Written in 2008. Having been a very avid tennis player and fan most of my adult life, I jumped at the chance to attend the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadow, New York during the 80's. I was going to Chicago and Atlanta on business anyway, so it fit right in. I got the tickets from the Northern California Tennis Association, for which I was a committee volunteer. During a meeting, the Director asked if anyone wanted the tickets, and I said YES. Do ... read more

24th August, 2022 We managed a bit of a sleep in this morning. Stepped out of the hotel just after 10am and got a taxi to Central Park. We had planned to get an electric bike to ride around the park but he dropped us at a different spot than what I seen before so we didn’t get a bike. We walked to the zoo and looked around there for over an hour. The zoo was ok but I think our Melbourne one is so much nicer and kinder to the animals. After another hour of walking with no way of knowing where the hell we were as nothing was signposted, we found a path that led out of the park and we ordered a Lyft back to the hotel. Our feet were hot. Once our ... read more
