We flew from Kansas City to La Guardia airport in New York. The flight was only two hours and fifteen minutes. We took an UBERr to our hotel in Manhattan near the theatre district. Our plan is theatre and art. We bought tickets for three shows from home and hope to buy tickets to more show as at the half price ticket booth. We arrive on Saturday afternoon and have tickets to see Dear Evan Hanson Saturday night. We have a great Italian meal at a restaurant a few doors from our hotel before the show. We loved the show. We have seen the movie so we know what to expect. The cast was great. We had great seats. The woman who sat next to me and the woman behind me were sobbing at the sad part. A great start to our trip.
Our first full day in New York and we decide to visit the Frick Collection. The museum is being renovated but they have a temporary location during the renovation. We walk to the museum through Central Park. Henry Clay Frick died in 1919 and bequeathed his home, paintings, schulptures and decorative arts to the public. We bought our
tickets online, We brought headphones that connect to our phones. We download the museum app and we use the audio guide to learn about the paintings. We really enjoyed this museum. I don’t know what the museum has on offer normally but the temporary museum seems to be filled with the best art. The museum is not too large so you don’t get too tired. We took a break at lunchtime. The museum cafe was out of food to we left the museum and found an Italian restaurant a few blocks away. Today is 9-11 and we decided not to visit the 9-11 memorial today because it may be very crowded. On our walk to the museum we passed the 9-11 running race and many firefighters and police are dressed in their dress uniforms. We guess they had attended the 9-11 ceremonies. We walk through Central Park again on our way back to our hotel. We feel like locals walking the paths. We stop for a glass of wine at a lake side café in the park. What a great park so much room and a great variety of activities for the locals.
Theatre tonight, we have tickets to
Beetle Juice. The theatre is a short walk from our hotel. We were disappointed the actor who plays Beetle Juice is out and we have the substitute but the sub did great. We enjoyed this fun musical. After the musical we walk back to our hotel, Times Square is full of people still so we feel safe walking to our temporary home.
Today we meet our niece Ashley Anderson for lunch. Ashley lives and works in New York. We were pleasantly surprised to find out she worked one block from our hotel. We meet for lunch at a burger restaurant at the street level of her office building. It was great catching up with Ashley and hearing about her life in NY. After lunch we go to the half price ticket booth in Times Square. It is Monday and most theatres in NY are dark on Mondays. We buy tickets for Phantom of the Opera. We have seen it twice before but since it is a great show we decide to see it again. From Times Square we walk to the Hudson river and along the water front path. It is a beautiful day. We wanted to visit the
Intepid Sea, Air & Space Museum but it is closed today. It was closed so volunteers could help work on the ship. We saw multiple large groups of workers waiting to get on the ship.
Tonight we walk to see Phantom of the Opera. It does not disappoint and we enjoy the show.
We change hotels today. When we were in Chicago we were checking out the Drake Hotel because it is a beautiful hotel. A man in the lobby was selling discount stays in Hilton hotels in exchange for attending a time share sales pitch. I have been wanting to travel to New York for a while so we signed up. So we moved to the Hilton Club and we will stay for three nights. After checking in we head to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We have never been here so we are happy to finally visit the museum. We stay the whole day, eating lunch in the museum café. A full day is not enough to see everything so we prioritize the art and we are able to see everything we wanted to see.
Wednesday, we have tickets to visit the 911Memorial Museum. We
take the subway to the museum. The subway is so easy to pay for, you tap your credit card on the OMNY machine on the subway gate. Your credit card will be charged $2.75 no matter which station you exit from. The subway exits are open no need to swipe a card or ticket upon exiting. We used google maps public transportation option to find our way on the subway to the museum. It is a time saver to buy your museum tickets online. The pre purchased ticket line was short and the same day purchase line was long. We spent a long time in the museum reading the exhibits and watching the videos. The museum includes more than 40,000 images, 14,000 artifacts, 3,500 oral recordings and over 500 hours of video. If you have not been to the museum put it at the top of your list if you visit New York. It was sad reading and hearing about the people who lost their lives and the heros who tried to save them. Outside of the museum is the memorial pools which do not require a ticket to visit. The names of 2,983 victims are inscribed on 152 bronze
parapets on the pools.
Lunch is next on our schedule. We find a pub close to the museum, it was not great. We should have walked further away from the museum to find a local spot. The rest of the day is spent walking. We visit the port, St Patricks Cathedral, Rockerfeller Pl.aza and many neighborhoods. Michael Jackson the musical is our show for tonight. We feel a bit conflicted because of the accusations that he molested children but we decide to separate our feelings for the music from our feelings for the person he was. The show is excellent and we enjoy it a lot. The actor who plays Michael is so good you forget he is not the real person. He sounds and moves like MJ.
Today we must attend the time share talk. They do a good job trying to sell us a time share. These salespersons are good at their job but we stand firm and don't buy a timeshare. Lunch and more walking follow the timeshare presentation. On our way to lunch we stop and buy tickets to Drunk Shakespeare at the half price ticket booth. The show has actors who get drunk
during the show and they sell food and drink to enjoy at your table while you watch and sometimes participate in the show. Not your typical broadway show but a fun evening.
Our last morning in NY, we travel by UBER to Penn train station. We have a reservation for the train to Providence, RI. The track the train will arrive in is not announced until about five minutes before it arrives. So we along with a hundred or so more people wait around watching the arrival board. Once they announce the tract everyone lines up to go down the stairs and board the train. Since we have assigned seats there is no rush to board the train. The seats on the train are comfortable and they have free internet. There is a café on the train but we brought our own sandwiches. Our New York trip is done but we will be back. We loved the theatre and there will always be new shows. Sorry this post is old but I could not add my pictures to my travelblog and I almost gave up but finally tried adding the photos using my phone and that worked.
